I don't understand people who app from the books but keep the show's age/appearance. As someone who watched the show before reading the books, I was actually shocked at how different some of the situations were due to age. Especially Dany's. I just don't understand why you would app book Dany (a child) but have her portrayed by show Dany (an adult). Book Dany's experience is far more shocking and tragic because of her young age. She was a little girl forced to be with a grown man, not an adult forced to be with another adult like in the show. There's a huge difference in how that psychologically affects someone, and I'd argue that adult Dany's mental state is not the same as child Dany because she had time to mature and grow before being forced into her situation. She's not an innocent child. Why not just app from the show if you want to play adult Dany? Trying to consolidate the two seems like an attempt to gloss over the serious issues that come with her age and situation, in which case the person isn't truly apping the book version at all, but rather an AU one where they pick and choose traits from two noticeably different versions of the character.

I don't get A) why people do this and B) why it's even allowed in games without an AU specification, tbh.

Discomfort with the idea of playing someone with little-girl face who's been raped, molested by her brother, sexualized and etc. I suspect most book rpers actively want to gloss over the characters' true ages and using the actors from the show makes it a whole lot easier. And it seems to me that GRRM glossed over it too: he may be interested in creating a gross and gritty world in which these kinds of violations happen but he doesn't really seem interested in exploring the ramifications of rampant abuse towards his child characters, except perhaps Arya and Sansa. Dany reads like an adult. Long before I saw the show, while reading the books I often forgot that she was supposed to be just 13(?).

Gotta agree there. Reading the books, I forgot what age she was supposed to be and pictured her as more like 17.

+1

All of the child characters read older than their intended ages. I picture them all a few years older before I watched the show.

that's disappointing

I don't get why you don't understand using the show's PBs. Pretty much every book fandom uses the adaptations actors as their PBs once they come out.

As for the age thing, it's definitely the uncomfortable playing such young characters in such adult situations.

I don't think it's be considered AU if you pull from both the book and the show. Wasn't it partially George's idea to age them up for the show? And the younger characters pretty much stay the same between book and show. I didn't notice any differences between anyone besides age. And Robb being a douchebag.

It absolutely was GRRM's idea, and he's stated on his LiveJournal both that he originally started the characters very young because he thought he was going to have a five year timeskip early in the plot (that ended up being unworkable, see also the Meereneese knot) and that if he could change one thing about the books, he would have made most of the characters their show ages from the beginning.

There are definitely differences though! One I've noticed in DWRP (possibly making anon pointless but oh well) is that Theon's relationship with the Starks in the show is very different. In the books, Robb, the eldest, is still a good five years younger than Theon and Theon sees him as a little brother and barely notices the younger siblings. His loyalty is loyalty to the Starks as a house and Robb as a fondness. In the show, they're obviously much closer in age and have experienced various coming of age social rituals together, so therefore Theon's eventual betrayal is more acute. But for me personally, exploring that and making book canon work with show ages was part of the fun.

How old are the characters supposed to be on the show, anyway?

afaik everyone was pretty much aged up two years or so, so jon, robb and theon are all like 17ish, sansa is 15, arya is 13, bran is 11, and rickon is 6. give or take like a year for each of them.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
jon robb and theon are all around 17-19, sansa is 13, arya is 11 or 12, bran is 10, and rickon is 6

the older boys and arya are estimates, the other three all have stated ages in the show

Who cares about the adults...... Use the show pb. Even the books. Dany is older by the last book and most people app her from that.

(Anonymous) 2013-03-03 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
Because some of the things Dany (and a lot of the child characters) get put through in the books is pretty uncomfortable for a lot of players. Aging the characters up a little makes things easier on everyone.
