i haven't read bleach in forever but did he seriously add even MORE new characters

He started a new arc so, of course?
if it's been a while you probably missed the fullbringers too so I would say there are 9 or so new characters you wouldn't recognize.

only 3 from the new arc so far though.
He did say the non dead arrancar might show up again if that's any consolation.

too early to really have any opinion on them. so far i'm enjoying that the two shinigami don't seem super special

i also don't see the problem with new characters? every arc needs new villains at the very least

I don't have anything against new characters except when it comes at the expense of old ones. He has a tendency to introduce characters the fans grow to love, then just discard them and never let them have screen time ever again without a word about what they're doing now, and it's disappointing. Especially when you try to RP one of them and want more updated canon.

The one character I had hopped to play is only a side character and hasn't shown up in 200+ chapters. I'd like to know what happened to him.

Nothing. He's stuck in limbo, just like Tien between the Cell and Buu sagas.
