Anons, lately I've been itching to play Doug (from The 49th Name) in a formal game. Good idea/bad idea/"anon you fool Doug only shows up in that one short story"?

Assuming it's a good idea, though, any game recs? Hoping for somewhere with a decent ongoing plot and a slow-to-medium pace.

Actually, there have been at least a couple of Dougs players over the years, one at Kannagara and Anteceded and few more at the DGM DR back on LJ.

It's not necessarily a bad idea to play him but having an awareness of the limited amount of canon he's in will be key and it be worth keeping any headcanon you might have believable and accessible to other players.

Unfortunately I don't have any games to suggest for you because I'm currently looking for something similar myself but if you haven't already it might be worth checking out the

app_this_plz and see if anything there catches your eye.

I've been rereading the manga to scrounge up what info there is on Finders/the workings of the Order in general to work out some headcanon backstory for him, yeah. (Though do you know if it's worth digging into the anime, too? Or if there's been any translated resources notes that might be related out there?)

Talking about headcanon, though, do you think it's better to leave his backstory ambiguous or actually write out as much details as possible? The line between "elaboration/extrapolation" and "adapting into an OC" seems a little vague sometimes.

Looking up stuff on Finders in general isn't a bad thing at all. Toma certainly seems to give us some decent background during the Martel Arc early on. There may also be something in Grey Arc and/or the Character Book, but if there is unfortunately I don't have links to translations. Perhaps someone else does.

Aside from that, there's always Kanda's novel where he's stuck with a Finder where you might be able to gather some additional info and the anime also told that story in episodes 33 and 34.

On headcanon, it's true the line between minor character and OC can vary, but I think it depends on the character. Personally, my sense is that as long as the background you have in mind for him is believable, makes sense for him and doesn't impede on any other canon characters then it can't hurt to have an idea in your mind what his background might be. I think for characters like Doug there's less concern in general because he's not a game changer/breaker like say Neah/14th is.

So if I were playing with you and you came up with a backstory for Doug that was convincing I'd roll with you, but I love minor characters and their potential for play and development whereas other players aren't so into headcanon. It just comes down to communication with potential cast mates if you're apping into a pre-existing cast or you LCW it and have castmates join you.

...there are translations of that Kanda novel out somewhere? I had no idea. Do you have a link? (I mean I found the anime episodes on YT, but it'd be good to have the novel stuff as the main source.)

I'm skimming the info today! ...and yeah, that is a considerable no-lack of plot right there, from the looks of it. Though from the comm posts I saw it looks like the current arc(?) of events is wrapping up, if I understand right?

Well, I mean, downtime is good! It might be easier to get into the swing of the game then. I was also worried about jumping in in the middle of everything coming to a head current plot-wise.

Though it looks like apps aren't open for a few weeks, so that's maybe a moot point. ~~More time to prep?~~
