[D] Free space

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

Anyone else getting tired of the snarky bad ass teacher type?

I know this is Xavier's, but there are just some people who shouldn't be in a teaching position. I don't care how cute/fun/funny people think it is.

I feel like there's less "people who should never ever be teaching at this school" going on here than I've seen elsewhere, but I agree that it seems like the majority of them are too-cool-for-school aint-give-a-fuck types, when they should definitely be more of a minority.

I kinda agree with you on that. But as someone who plays a teacher, though I'm not sure if they fit your description or not, I can also understand the reasons why. Because snarky and bad ass is generally a pretty popular character type and sometimes it's difficult to make the character fit into a student and still keep their personality pretty much intact. At least that was the reason I made mine a teacher even though, honestly, they're not exactly what I'd call teacher material.

I'm generally talking about the Shego or Bad Girl type of teacher.

It's a weird feeling when suddenly Logan almost seems like a model teacher in comparison to some of the current teachers.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-14 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a little unfair, I'd say. For one, for all of Shego's irreverence, she's been doing a pretty decent job of teaching her subject (hell, it's canon that the woman has a degree in child development - just because she's snarky doesn't mean she's not doing her job). She was brought in specifically because she wouldn't coddle the students, and would teach them to survive in combat where it's very easy to get killed. And genuinely seems to care about them, at least in a 'I don't want you getting your dumbass killed' way.

As for Bad Girl, she's fresh to the game. Judging a character based on the less-than-a-week they've been in? Right, okay.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-14 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
A little unfair? With the way she's been behaving? No, it's completely fair. The ends don't justify the means, and there are plenty of other people who can teach kids survival without being crappy role models who behave inappropriately towards their students on a ton of different levels. NPCs if nothing else! We seem to have enough of them.

She's not fit to be teaching children, not Shego and on that note same goes for Bad Girl. I don't care if they're "credited" or if they have "degrees". When it comes down to it there are some situations where characters just don't fit into a spot matter how hard you try to shove them into it.

Yeah, it's been less-than-a-week, but can you honestly say that someone would hire her to teach kids with her personality, behavioral issues, and past?

So are you running for the state educational board? Are you going to make it your life goal to find mutant teachers without their own issues?

omg

Are you the RP police? Is this party busted? I swear I'm just holding these dysfunctional characters for a friend.

You sound like you're not familiar with X-Men. In the comics, Xavier makes some highly questionable decisions in who he'll put on the team/at the school/in his employ. Characters like Sage, Emma Frost, Sabretooth, Mystique, Magneto, Deadpool, Domino, and probably others I'm forgetting have been put to use by Xavier or those who work under him. These are sociopaths, murderers, people with questionable morals, mercenaries, and downright insensitive folks who still do what they were brought in to do.

There's nothing about the X-Men that's perfect, squeaky-clean, or hell, even mentally stable. That's kind of the point.

+1

From my limited experience with Marvel (the Fox movies) I see the Institute as both a school and a home for wayward mutants. Xavier wants to help the kids learn about their powers and how to use them for good but he's training X-men too. So what if he doubles up some of the X-men as teachers. He's taking what he can get. Its not like the world has a billion mutants to cherry pick from. Each mutant he gets in the Institute is one less mutant in the Brotherhood or on Magneto's side.

Not everyone is going to be the perfect teacher or the best role model. Thats what makes Marvel fun.

Piling on to say that this is stupid.

In a school with Wolverine and Emma Frost on the senior staff, Shego's mix of troll-ish, bitchy, and sometimes law-violating ain't exactly wildly insane. Some of what I've read of her dealing with kids on a student-teacher basis drifts close to responsible even. (Saying this as someone whose characters have no real CR with Shego and who doesn't especially want any.)

I'll admit that Bad Girl being a teacher right off the bat (hahah) strains plausibility, and I do wish more students would react to behavior that's not okay for faculty as not okay instead of jumping straight on these characters' dicks. (Figuratively. So far.) But the first can be written up to difficulty with apping her into this setting, and the second's not something their players can control.

Not sure why you're so worked up over it!

High school students calling out a teacher's bad behavior when said teacher is 'cool' and 'hip?'. More like "woo-hoo, best/easiest class!"

I mean, obviously not all students, but not all students are behaving like you said anyway.

Because combat classes (which are what these teachers manage) are absolutely easy classes.

Look up the trope 'Drill Sergeant Nasty.' Might do you some good.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-14 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't say Shego or Bad Girl are Drill Sergeant Nasty types. They're snarky and abrasive, but it's not like they're hurling abuse at students or pushing them ridiculously beyond, like you said, what you'd expect for a combat course at a school for super powered mutants.

If you're a student who's into those things, ie someone who would be taking the classes in the first place, seems like someone like Shego or Bad Girl would make things more interesting and entertaining than, say, a professor who was super by the book and taught combat by theory, or someone who was actually Drill Sergeant Nasty.
