[D] Free space

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

Aziraphale | Good Omens

Any advice would be much appreciated!

just a few quick things i usually don't see in aziraphales:
- aziraphale can definitely kick ass if need be!
- he's much smarter than he acts; or, at least more cunning. no one he doesn't want to find his bookshop finds it a second time, after all.
- he has things that annoy him. pet peeves, i guess. he can be grumpy and ill-tempered, and probably holds grudges for even longer than crowley does, and for less reason.

and:
- his book'selling' techniques are amazing.

building on what abovenon said:

aziraphale is not goody-goody, nor he is even particularly concerned with other people's feelings. i've seen a few aziraphales get stale because they were too afraid of getting negative CR with him, and whoa -- he can get a ton of negative CR, even if it's just the petty squabbling kind. two things i like to remember: first, crowley's assessment of aziraphale being "enough of a bastard to be worth liking" -- the dude's not all pure angelic sunshine and rainbows. second, he is a little myopic about his own interests. referring here to after he & crowley pick up anathema and realize they still have the Book, it's crowley who's the one worried about the consequences of losing the antichrist and keeps fretting about aziraphale keeping in touch and being accessible to him. aziraphale just wants to read this Sweet Book. he's more solitary bookseller than den mother, by far.

i'd say in terms of how much to fret about angelic rules (if that's a thing you're worried about), he keeps to them partially just because it's his job. he's been on earth for a while, and while he does his little miracles and lectures crowley about wickedness, his real priorities are his "human" vices -- y'know, sushi and that. wine. books. not a role model angel, is what i mean. his standards have slipped in the past couple millenia.

to add another dimension to abovenon's smarter than he acts point: he is brilliant, but he is kind of stuck in the 1950s in a pop culture sense just because that's the kind of thing he likes. he's not ignorant, he's just not interested in crowley's "new" music and sleek modern things. he can use a damn phone.

if you're wanting for more everyday, "ha ha i'm not an angel my name is ezra fell" types of behavior, the english/intelligent/treeful of monkeys quote is worth looking at for how he's perceived by others. he seems like a stereotype of those things at first glance; the actual amount i suppose is up to interpretation.

that's what i've got to offer, uh, hope it made sense. good luck anon, aziraphale is fun.

So far as the "role model angel" thing goes, Aziraphale makes me think of someone who's been raised steeped in religion and for whom it's second nature. He knows all the lines and can recite them automatically, he doesn't seem to really think about ethics the way Crowley might. (And he also seems to have a lot more faith in his own judgment than the rules, to the point where he's lying to God right off the bat so the poor mortals can have their fire.)

that is an excellent way of putting it, yes!

i think he has largely done his own thing for so long that he doesn't feel the need to worry about rules and rites the way crowley does. (even though crowley's been doing his own thing too, crowley is a Worrier.) crowley is also way more entrenched in human stuff/behavior, while aziraphale tends to hang about doing angel things and reading books and not getting Involved. he's much more confident than crowley, despite their respective outward manners...

for the second nature religion thing, it makes me think, like - he knows it all by heart, but he also isn't so bound to it that he never goes 'well, it says that, but in this situation we should just close the book and overlook that, what do you say....' he's literally an independent field agent; as long as the boss gets a good final report, he knows he can do essentially whatever he wants.

which basically is just rehashing it again, i just... love good omens......
