Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

You actually can apply Samus as canon without OtherM - just play from Prime. At this point, it's pretty much a seperate timeline entirely.

and the manga are the only canon examples we have of her actual personality.

I would also contest this: The prime games especially show a lot about her personality without specifically monologueing about them. There's an excellent Extra Credits episode on characterization via game mechanics, that's a case in metroid as well.

...That said, you make good points for anyone that wants to include OtherM in. Especially 3 is important. Very good post. I pity Adam players who have to pick through this mess more than Samus players

Those are all very excellent points, and I will also agree with the other anon.

It's well put in this tumblr post, that there are glimpses of her personality throughout the other games. There's the little opening monologue in Super Metroid. In Prime 2 this scene speaks volumes despite no words being said. Her body language changes throughout Prime 2 as she encounters Dark Samus--from stilted hesitation and confusion to fist-clenching resolvent and unwavering determination. Heck, even in Zero Mission with fight with Ridley, there's a blink-and-you-miss-it shot of the expression on her face before she proceeds with immediate ass-kicking. There are many little subtle examples, but they are there. Samus is a very tough lady.

Trying to incorporate Other M can be extremely daunting, but keep in mind that that's only a segment (and a low one at that) of her life, and not representative of her as a whole. The game has good ideas and concepts, it just suffers from shitty writing and piss awful presentation.

THAT SAID, I've been toying around with Adam for fun lately and if you wanted someone to test drive Samus with (from any time period) or bounce off of, I would have no objections ho ho and be very excited to do so. Hopefully I could do Adam justice as well!

I have heard about the quibbling about whatshisname from Other M not liking the Prime games. It reminds me of Miyamoto not liking what Rare did to the Donkey Kong series. Only instead of turning around and making an awesome game like Yoshi's Island in protest, we got Other M instead.

Anyway, I'm not prepared to treat them as a separate timeline until it's absolutely official that they are. Right now, there's no issue accepting them all as one continuity. Besides, I'd hate to see them separate. Metroid Prime offers such great insight into the Space Pirates and the Galactic Federation.

I would also contest this: The prime games especially show a lot about her personality without specifically monologueing about them. There's an excellent Extra Credits episode on characterization via game mechanics, that's a case in metroid as well.

I don't disagree with you. I'm inclined to pick up a lot of characterization from little things like that when I play other video game characters. The Adam above links some great examples of it too. I suppose I should clarify that they're the only canon examples we have of dialog and introspection from Samus besides Other M. Given that Other M beats us over the head with Samus's self-narration, it's useful to have other examples to look at.

As said, I thought your posting was absolutely awesome. I just have a chimpanzee on my shoulder about characterization-by-gameplay.

So again, you rock and sorry that I was a bit more negative sounding than I should.

Purely for the record, it was never stated anywhere the Sakamoto dislikes the Prime games or doesn't consider them canon - it was just a weird game of telephone that got out of control, most because people (mostly people on /v/) really needed somebody to be angry at after Other M came out and statements in translated interviews started getting twisted and, yeah.

What he said was that he considers the Prime games a side story, or, a "gaiden". They don't mess with the "main" games he made, (Metroid 1/Zero Mission, Metroid II, Super, Other M and Fusion) and his games don't mess with them. They're all tucked away very neatly in their self-contained part of the timeline, but they're still very much a part of the entire Metroid timeline.

Of course, then Other M came out and it repeatedly contradicted events from the Prime games, which only fueled the notion that the Prime games weren't canon anymore. But Other M contradicts nearly every other Metroid game and the prequel manga, so it's just crap writing, rather than some attempt to quash the Prime games out of canon. I hope. I would hope that Sakamoto has a lot of respect and pride in the Prime games because they're basically a 5-year long loving tribute to his magnum opus, Super Metroid.

That is everything to my understanding as well. The Prime games have their own arc, but they are still very much a part of Samus's story. Other M contradicts or retcons nearly every other Metroid game and the Manga, and it even contradicts itself if you want to read into the suit malfunctioning parts as more than just a lazy deus ex machina, which is truly a testament to the extent of its awful writing.

Man, one day I'd love to just sit down and rewrite Other M so that it actually makes fucking sense, and doesn't butcher Samus and Adam's character.

It would be cool to see it done as a collection of log passages, in the style of Metroid Prime. Like, the log reports that Other M didn't have, but totally should have. From the perspective of Adam, Anthony, and the other soldiers on the mission.
