Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

semi-app related

just something that continues to bother me: the strengths and weaknesses section.

i really feel like the mods should have a discussion about how that should be handled, because i've seen people get in having a very short list or 3-4 things each (which i believe in the app says is fine, and it's also how i got in with characters numerous times) without even separating it into things like physical/emotional/etc... and yet whenever a certain mod judges an app, they seem to expect that it be almost longer than the personality section in terms of detail.

sure maybe sometimes it's the case of one person being able to summarize more than others, but other times it's just ridiculous and seems really unfair.

(and ftr: app reviewing inconsistencies has been brought up on the game hmd before to no changes.)

personally i think it'd be better if that was removed and included in the personality, and there was instead a section for powers or special abilities if applicable.

With non-powered characters, too, I always feel like I'm just restating a lot from strengths/weaknesses to personality and the other way around.

this has been suggested in the past, multiple times. they won't budge on it.

I can kind of see where they're coming from.

I've played with characters (especially OCs) in the past that will try and define their character completely by their powers. Like they have some generic personality traits BUT THEY CAN DO THIS AND THIS AND THIS OTHER THING AND THEY KNOW ABOUT THESE AND etc, so on.

I think that keeping them separate maybe makes it easier to watch out for that kind of thing.

This. I've found that an app that has a strengths section that is considerably longer than the weaknesses section is a red flag for powergamers.

I actually like that they're separate. The weaknesses section especially makes me think harder about my character's flaws, and I've gotten new insight in the past by really stopping to scrutinize them.

To keep from redundancy, I just keep the strengths/weaknesses in mind while I'm writing the personality section and skim over things I know I'll be writing about later.

+1

I've had apps where I've been really struggling to make the personality section cohesive, and I found skipping it and doing the strengths/weaknesses really helped me verbalize my understanding of the character as a whole. I love the section and I think it's really useful.

I like having them separate as well, but I also feel like a simple bullet-point list should be considered okay. Hell, if it were encouraged, people would be forced to be succinct and maybe then it'd be easier to see exactly how they interpret the character behind the walls of fluff and padding.

Dropped from Luceti a while ago, but I think I used bullet points in just about every app I ever submitted there without any problems. Is that looked down on now, or am I just misunderstanding your comment? Because I always thought that was a lot easier than writing everything out too.

it is, but some of the mods expect more than bullet points. i've never had to break it down into the three suggested categories either, but i've seen someone get a revision request for not doing that.
