Have you looked at revenance_rpg? It's a smaller, slower-paced backtag-friendly game that has quite a few lone canon warriors that are doing pretty well. It's based on Kingdom Hearts 3D, taking place in the dream world in the game, but you don't need to be familiar with the canon in order to play.

Powers are only nerfed if characters are ridiculously overpowered (think DBZ or Nippon Ichi) and they arrive with the items they're carrying on their person.
