Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. It doesn't look like DW can handle 5,000 comment entries at the moment so please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.

the mods are great but i can't be the only one who thinks memes are being made unnecessarily complicated

Re: ABAX

(Anonymous) 2012-02-10 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
how is posting one every other friday "complicated"?

(Anonymous) 2012-02-10 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
it really doesn't bother me at all

i'm not that big on memes as it is as i usually have enough game tags to deal with, but yeah don't see how its all that complicated. they're just policing the memes a bit, trying it out

who knows if they'll even keep doing it this way

Honestly? I used to be in Cape and Cowl, where there are memes everyday, and it got tedious fast. Doing a meme every so often to play crack or unwind is fine, but they shouldn't take precedence over actually playing the game, which is what it felt like. So I'd end up not participating at all, and there'd be daily lulls in tagging when a new meme went up and everyone commented there.

So I like that there's a designated day for a meme. And besides, this is just a fun little extra they give us. They don't have to let us do memes at all. There are plenty of comms devoted to them.

I don't find it at all unnecessarily complicated. Having a set day for memes means that we won't have to put up with yet another meme going up every time someone decides they're bored, along with the inevitable plurk spam that comes with it. Having the mods post the memes, with suggestions made by the players, means that the comm won't be dominated by the interests of one or two people who are fastest off the mark when meme day rolls around. And I like that memes are running opposite apps, because it would suck to be the new player whose intro is overlooked because everyone's too busy posting to the current kink meme.

If the mods decide to relax the restrictions later, that's cool, but it's a pretty good idea for a game that is as new and huge and spammy as Abax.

I get the 'random number generator is king' thing, but being left out of the item drop over and over and over when other people are involved in every one or get stuff for more than one character in one drop?

Pretty much sucks.

Re: ABAX

(Anonymous) 2012-02-11 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
I think they made it perfectly clear item drop was never meant to be a guarantee. It was a fun, additional thing that sometimes work out for you and sometimes doesn't.

I think it's sort of silly to see people get bent out of shape about it. Do you really need these items so badly? Isn't more fun to be creative with the Abax surroundings? I always felt item drop should be a nice surprise if it works out and nothing more.

Re: ABAX

(Anonymous) 2012-02-11 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
I don't actually mind the way it's run, I think it's organized and the randomness lends itself to a certain surprise. And I haven't even asked for anything very interesting.

I was just venting that it sucks to never have your number come up.
orange_balls: (Can't you see I'm busy?)

[personal profile] orange_balls 2012-02-11 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
Are you putting your characters into it to both find items and get them if they can? Doing both can help your chances in being part of the item drop some how.

I know it's a bummer anon not getting picked by the random thingy, but I rather like this over the way other games do it. This way it's kind of amusing to see what happens, rather than everyone putting in what they want and EVERYONE getting the items.

That way it just ends up too easy for people getting stuff they want.

(Anonymous) 2012-02-11 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
I have, actually. Put characters in for both options.

I don't mind the way this is run, I'm mostly just grumbling that I never get picked. I know it's random, so it will never be fair, but being left out over and over is always going to stink.

This isn't a complaint at the mods. More at the universe not picking me.

There have been three item drops. Three. Even ignoring the fact that the mods have stated repeatedly that everyone getting an item would never be a sure thing, three instances of not getting something RNGed in your favor when there are consistently upwards of a hundred characters put in the lottery is kind of ridiculous. The mods have already taken steps to make it more fair by ensuring any one character can only get one item from home per drop, and can't get an item two drops in a row. Asking them to also sort by player would make the workload ridiculous, since iirc they're doing this by hand.

Don't get me wrong, I've put in for each drop, too, and haven't received anything yet, and yeah, there's that momentary flutter of disappointment. But letting it get beyond momentary disappointment to the point of actively griping about it is pretty obnoxious. It's not a guarantee, not getting an item shouldn't damage your ability to play, and if people keep having this attitude every time there's a drop, I will be honestly amazed if the mods don't just get fed up and stop doing them.
