Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 5,000. "One of our biggest load problems is entries that have a high number of comments -- loading those entries causes a big hit -- and we've been seeing an increase in the number of entries with lots of comments lately. If even a few high-traffic journals or communities started opening new posts when comments reached 2000 or 2500 instead of letting the post run until it hit the maximum number of comments, it would definitely help." - DW_News

Comics recs?

Are ultimate x-men or astonishing x-men worth it?

ALSO. I want to read Avengers material, anything at all (blame those constant trailers), so a starting point on those would be sweet.

astonishing x-men is sooooo worth it. it's pretty hit and miss on whether people like ultimate or not. i personally wouldn't go near ultimate.

astonishing is a great starting point for x-men; anything ultimate (except spider-man) isn't worth it.

for avengers, new avengers v1 is the most new-reader-friendly. v2, for reference, is the current one (and it's been pretty stupid).

If you want to read Ultimate X-Men, only read the first 30 issues. It goes to shit after that.

Astonishing X-Men is very new reader friendly. It's what got me back into comics after not reading them regularly for years.

I agree with the anon above who recommended New Avengers vol.1. It is also a really good jumping on point-- I lent the first two trades to a friend of mine who read DC exclusively and she got hooked.

And if you're interested in older stuff, I always have to suggest West Coast Avengers to people. It's just a fun book, centered around Hawkeye. It's finally being released in trades, too. If you do decide to go that route, start with Hawkeye vol. 1 #1-4 (a mini from 1983-- it was just released in trade) and go from there.

Ultimate X-Men is good up to and including the arc "Magnetic North" -- run away and never look back after that.

Astonishing is worth it and incredibly accessible to new readers. If you like it, you may also want to check out Grant Morrison's New X-Men since Astonishing is set immediately after that. New X-Men is also designed for new readers to jump in.

Well, I wouldn't really consider myself a new reader (more like an occasional reader who reads bits and pieces of everything and needs a more concrete storyline), but I'll definitely take that into consideration and pick up Astonishing anyway!

Mostly I guess it's just not really having a coherent idea of what to read besides "read everything ever".

As far as Avengers go, New Avengers I'll check out as well since in general beyond X-Men & DC stuff I'm not familiar with much else besides oh hey these guys look interesting :c

Ultimate X-Men as in the old series, or the currently running one?

The old series is garbage straight through. I read it all and there was maybe three good issues hiding in there. Writing quality varies from phenomenally bad to just mediocre, and the art gets an even worse end of the stick.

The series that's currently running, though, is pretty good! Good enough for me to stick it in my pull. It's not exactly new-reader friendly, though, and it's new so there's still plenty of time for it to get completely stupid.
