STEAL! At least until stealing without use of the materia was mastered. Oh, and don't forget Leviathan!

When I play FFVII, I always give the same materia to the same characters so it's kind of become headcanon for me when I write now too. I read a really funny yet kind of heart breaking fic once about Cloud enjoying using Mimic so there's that. He always gets Lightning too because I think he likes to fry electronics for some reason. I give Tifa the Phoenix summon as a kind of gift for taking care of Cloud while everyone else is running around. I don't give her or Cloud Fire thanks to Nibelheim. Barret always gets Ice. I try not to think too hard about why I do that. Thanks to Obstinate Melon's comic on deviantART from now on Aerith is getting the Titan summon and I usually suit her up with Barrier. Cid gets Fire so he can heat his tea properly. Red is usually my secondary healer and Vincent gets diddly squat because once he goes beastly I can't use any of his stuff anyway. Yuffie of course gets Steal and I admit, I never use Cait Sith - so I always give him Poison.

What's everyone else mentally suit their characters up with? And not just VII but all the other games too(weapons/magic/whatever)?

I like giving Tifa steal when it first comes up since she's the hand-to-hand fighter, the one who looks like she could actually be mugging someone with her animation. I like to give Cloud lightning because of all the energy it has bound up in it and then it just lashes out and you're pretty much fucked. ~~May also be influenced by Lightning's facial design being based on him.~~ Aerith gets the healing magic and ice, although Obstinate Melon's comic does make me want to give her Titan XD Barret will usually just get some odd end and stick to shooting the shit out of everything, haha.

Cover goes to Cloud by default. Gotta bodyguard. (Okay, I've started using it tactically for leveling Limit Breaks, but for writing? He would have it. And complain at the others when he was made to use it, but be glad that it's him hurt and not them.)

lmao! Cover reminds me that I always give Cloud Counter-Attack - and then yell at him when everyone's supposed to be holding their actions and he's running in there whacking things.

Bad, bad Cloud. But when he's giving the players faultily-translated advice about when not to attack, what can be expected?

I still haven't forgiven him for getting us all killed with the whole Scorpion-tail-debacle the first time I played that game. Barret wasn't the only one feeling surly. I also remember how freaked out I was about making that time limit escape the first time. Dang it, Jessie, learn how to walk!

lmfao I kind of love Jessie's clumsiness though. It's the very first blink-and-you'll-miss-it (especially during the explosion itself) tipoff that Cloud's not the total asshole he's playing as.

uh. You have to, actually. if you don't stop in the timed section she's not there to open the door for you again. The other instance isn't player-controlled.

Squall = Quetzacoatl because storms hurrhurr, Diablos because I feel like he'd secretly think it was cool, Pandemona because lightning and wind guys
Quistis = Shiva because ice queen and Leviathan because I'm huge on matching elements
Zell = Ifrit because he seems like a firey guy and Brothers to ground him
Selphie and Rinoa = Siren and Carbuncle for cutesy/girly

I forget who got Alexander and I never got any of the others (yeah I never finished). Irvine usually got whoever was leftover when it was time to switch parties and I just switched junctions over completely :[

I gave Squall Shiva, Zell Quetzl and Brothers because of... well, the "energy" for all of them

I can't remember who had what other GFs in my games, except I'm pretty sure Selphie got Siren.

Mine's always gone like this:
Cloud - Lightning, because he comes with it and his name is Cloud. It just makes sense. Also Ramuh, Titan, Leviathan and Bahamut ZERO. ~~And Chocobo Lure.~~
Tifa - I usually end up giving her Fire up to the point where you get Red. lmao, I never gave a second thought to possible Nibelheim trauma so now I feel bad about that. Anyway, by endgame typically she's got Recover, Poison, and Earth, as well as Phoenix and Neo-Bahamut. I ALWAYS stick Deathblow on her because iirc, she's got the highest attack% stack so she lands the criticals a lot more frequently than the others. (Or kid!me just made that up and I never thought to check.)
Aerith - She's the healer and main magic user up until That Point; typically I give her Ice, Shiva, and the majority of the summons.
Red XIII - Fire, Ifrit, random summons, and Enemy Skill, as well as my second Deathblow.

... and tbh I hardly ever use any of the others except when just switching it up for fun, so I don't really have rules for them. Through multiple replays my tried-and-true party has always been Cloud/Tifa/Aerith through Disc 1, then Cloud/Tifa/Red after that. Haha, I should probably be more adventurous.

For me I always figured it would be Knights of the Round.

I guess b/c she'd think it was hilarious it would take SO. DAMN. LONG. for the summon to finish.

So while it's doing its whole thing everyone's giving her a look like "WHYYYY" and she's like "LOL >:D"

Also Leviathan. In my head, she has a special place in her heart for summon-type materia.

okay. I laughed my ass off at the picture of gleeful Yuffie, put upon team mates and KotR in my head.

And it makes me kind of nostalgic that both Yuffies so far have Leviathan. (this means next time I play I'm actually going to have to go to that damn temple and get if for her now)

You know always wondered what everyone would do when the summon shows up. Same goes for the other FF games. Do they just...step back and watch? Have a snack (in the case of KotR anyway)? Bicker amongst themselves on their battle strategy?

I'd say they'd heal and stuff BUT NO. They come back to battle in the same state of disrepair as they were before.

deep in the 'sure why not?' part of my head, I always took the FFVII fade out of the characters as them actually disappearing and the Summon temporarily taking their place. 'Put something into the universe, something has to be removed' kind of thinking. Humor-wise though I like the idea of the team pulling out folding chairs and picking up a well saved hand of cards to play go-fish while they wait for the dragon to finish coming in from outer space or Yuffie's knights to finish kicking the snot out of the poor bouncing penguin she siced them on.

Ohhh I like that whole 'put something in, take something out' thought. I never looked at it like that before! I always just figure they stand back like "Let's take a breather guys". Or if everyone's particularly cranky that day there would be bickering.

"I told you it was immune to fire! WHY DID YOU SUMMON IFRIT?"

I will admit to using ridiculously strong summons on poor, unsuspecting enemies that don't see what's coming.

I also accidentally kill chocobos a lot in FFX and I have no idea why. Poor chocobos :(

maybe the summon sucks up all the lifestream energy in that area so no one else can cast magic because it's greedy (well, that, and it's appearing out of "nothing"--there's gotta be some kind of trick to that).

Of course Aerith's using magic in the bahamut SIN fight but Aerith is kind of godmod at that point. doesn't count!

This is the only reason I can think of for them not healspamming because yeah, that would be pretty smart.

That actually makes a lot of sense. It would justify why everyone would come back from the summon in the red (if they were before the summon, anyway).

Now I just want to read a fic about the characters during the summon bit - maybe the first time. When they try to heal and they can't. Minor freak outs would probably be had, with cooler heads being all "Guys chill. We got this."

At least they kind of vanish, instead of doing the whole 'run off screen, run back in' thing FFX does. Hell, even a KO'd character gets up and runs away, then runs back and promptly falls back over. Which never fails to amuse me.

I abused Cecil in FF4 to hell and back so... Cloud gets White Magic and stuff. I think it kind of fits his personality too, in a roundabout way.

For everyone else:

Barrett: Fire Magic!
Tifa: Summons!
Red XIII: Lightning Magic!
Cait Sith: idk whatever I have lying around
Cid: idk whatever I have lying around
Vincent: He gets Aerith's Ice Magic when she. Yeah.
