: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 2,000 - 2,500 comments. "One of our biggest load problems is entries that have a high number of comments -- loading those entries causes a big hit -- and we've been seeing an increase in the number of entries with lots of comments lately. If even a few high-traffic journals or communities started opening new posts when comments reached 2000 or 2500 instead of letting the post run until it hit the maximum number of comments, it would definitely help." - DW_News

i'd like to play either bethany or hawke somewhere, but since their development depends so much on player choices... how do other muns deal with this, i wonder? is it just acceptable to write an app based on personal choices? or is this blurring the lines of canon/headcanon??

I haven't played as either of them but I do know that at my game the players usually simply made sure there was canon evidence to back up their choices.

I've never played them or seen them played, but I would see them treated as a canon OC.

There are three main ways Hawke can go, depending on the three tones the game gives you. Then you have the three classes and whether or not Hawke sides with the mages or the templars or somewhere in between.

If there are other characters from the game already in play who happen to remember things differently, it could be written off as an alternate world and they can still keep their version of canon.

Hey, Hawke is the best character to app!! What you have to do is to pick one personality type and one class. I picked Diplomatic Mage, so I wrote his app out that way, referencing Snarky and Aggressive after the fact. I also linked quotes to things Hawke says regardless of the type you play him as - even if they're few, they do show a very small amount of a consistent personality between them. Mainly what I noticed was his failure to think up stuff/jokes/insults on the spot all of the time. Then I looked at quotes from Diplomatic Hawke, referenced them with YouTube videos as much I could and found quotes and the like from how his companions spoke about him. A few things about Hawke are pretty consistence - family matters, that a lot of Kirkwall's residents are batshit and that he's a very charismatic guy.

Another thing I did was compare him to the Warden. You notice that the Amell Warden will say "I'm a mage!" or "My name is _____." and with Hawke, he rarely does the former and the latter? Not at all. It could be because he's fully voiced and all, but it's become a kind of personality quirk. I haven't played Rogue Hawke or Warrior Hawke in ages, so this is really just from Mage Hawke, haha. I hope it's helpful.

Also! To deal with the MAGE VS TEMPLAR thing, I always play out Hawke as neutral (being Diplomatic) and put his canon point before The Last Straw. It's way easier to deal with than the aftermath of that, at least in a game until DA3 comes out with more information, haha.

Mmm the siblings! It's probably easiest playing them from early on, if you're too worried about not mixing well with an assorted cast, but! Most games I've seen (or the ones I've played in with this guy) are pretty good with rolling with there being multiple canon AUs by nature of those player choices. Where Bethany ends up going, if she's killed early on, killed on the Deep Roads, left behind and taken into the Circle, brought down to the Deep Roads and handed over to the Grey Wardens -- those are all equally valid potentials.

You get the fun highlights of running into games where fellow characters come from a playthrough where maybe you don't even exist -- Carver was completely unknown for characters from a non-mage playthrough, except as a name mentioned once or twice by Hawke and/or Bethany. Bethany can go the same, if we're looking at a warrior/rogue playthrough.

I tend to take it as a challenge and interesting sort of picture woven by all the players collectively. When I apped Carver, I made it known what the choices were in game to land him where he was, and how he was. When I played Hawke, I did the same thing. Outlining what those choices were, showing those decisions that drive character development, seems to be the important key to illustrating which character in particular you're playing. I mean, the same goes for any character from DA2, depending. Was Hawke a jerk? Did they turn Isabela over to the Qunari? Did they piss Fenris off by helping the mages? Did it go the other way? Were they Sebastian's best friend because they too believed in all things for the Maker's glory? Did they even meet Sebastian? Did they meet Nathaniel? Or Zevran?

As the player above says, in the case of Hawke, there are a few core values which don't change. Specifics do come down to you laying out what your Hawke (or Bethany) did over the course of your game, then staying true to that. With Bethany, be mindful to how differently she reacts to being in Circle as opposed to being a Grey Warden, and how the point in time you take her from changes those particular views (later on, as a Warden, she is much more bitter; by the third act, as a Circle Mage, she might be the happiest she's been as far as openly known as a magic user and feeling like she's in a constructive environment for it).
