[D] Haa. Haa. Haa.

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

They're all shit. Every single one. The whole concept of them is fucking stupid. They're no better than poorly written canon OCs who exist for no reason than trying to turn ships that would otherwise be slash into het.

"Hello, Mary Sue," all of them.

The attitude that the entire concept of genderswaps is stupid to be pretty gross, tbqh. Have you ever considered that some people are genuinely interested in exploring what being female would mean for a main-title superhero? And don't say "the comics have done it better." These heroes are the firsts: Tony Stark is Iron Man before Pepper Potts becomes Rescue, Bruce Banner becomes Hulk before Jennifer Walters becomes She-Hulk, Thor, unlike Brunnhilde or Sif, is the crown prince of an extremely patriarchal culture, and Captain America became a super soldier at a time when the most women could do was serve as nurses or secretaries.

Some of us are genuinely interested in exploring what sex and gender identity mean for super heroes and it's insulting that you just wave it away as an excuse for het.

Actually, what's occurred to me is that any half way decent treatment of sex and gender issues should be a fuck of a lot more complex and messy than what goes into a rule 63 character. That's the reason why I say that it's shit across the board. Rule 63 characters are a complete oversimplification of issues to do with sex and gender.

"Exploring what sex and gender identity means for super heroes" via gender/sexswap isn't actually what happens. What happens is that the male version's story becomes a self fulfilling prophecy for the female version, and then a bunch of gender stereotypes get slapped on top.

So basically what you've got is the male character in a female body that means nothing except sex appeal and a bunch of crap stereotypes about how women act slapped on top to "adapt" her.

It's fucking disgusting, but that's no surprise because the whole premise of a genderswap character lends itself to exactly this kind of shallow stupid bullshit.

If you think you're being all profound and deep when you do this I seriously doubt your judgment. Slapping a bunch of stereotypes about women onto a character because "that's how women act" does not mean that you're exploring sex or gender identity for anyone.

What I'm getting from this is "some people do it badly so no one should do it", and by that logic, no one should ever do anything.

I did it because yes, I wanted to explore how being female would change this character's life and perceptions. They are still, largely, the same person - but their outlook is a bit different. They've had different experiences, different struggles.

Besides, if you want to write a female version of the Hulk, for example, suggesting someone write Jen Walters instead is pretty insulting. Jen is her own character.

Well then you're getting what you want to hear and not what's being said.

The premise of genderswap is itself based on a completely shallow view of sex and gender. If you're not able to think about how the premise itself is flawed and why, then you're sure as hell not doing anything better with it than every other shit rule 63 character out there.

You're not doing something deep and meaningful. You're applying a load of gender stereotypes and making a version of a character who's gender and sex are both just badly pasted on. Don't expect to have your ass patted for your profound and insightful exploration of gender when you're doing shit like that.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
No, you're not listening. Dude, not every genderswap is just pasted on. Some of us really like going into depth about how that character would have changed.

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
What I'm telling you is that to anyone who's not you, your "depth" is a steaming load of donkey dung.

It's not deep, because your understanding of gender and sex clearly aren't deep.

And you know how I know that?

Because you can't even see how using a male character's storyline as a the predetermined, prophetic, and self fulfilling outcome for the life of a female character is itself completely shallow and fucked up as a premise.

You make a rule 63 Tony, for example. How do you know she'll become Iron Woman? Because that's what her male counterpart becomes. How do you know she'll design a suit of armor? Because that's what her male counterpart did. Whatever "clever" plot twists you use to justify it, the outcome is predetermined by the storyline of the male canon character. None of the "changes" between the versions actually amount to any real difference. They're meaningless quirks. That's why it's pasted on.

In order to make a female version of a canon male character, his storyline will always necessarily be determinate of hers at the most fundamental and basic level, because it has to be if she's going to turn out as the female version of what he is! The male version is, in effect, the female version's destiny. She can never be different because in the end she has to BECOME what he becomes.

That's not "deep." It can't be deep because the fundamental premise is completely fucked up. If you're doing rule 63s you can never change that. All you can do is stick your fingers in your ears and go "lalalalala Look how deep and meaningful it is that I apply a bunch of gender stereotypes to characters! Aren't I edgy and great!"

(Anonymous) 2012-06-02 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
That is one of the worst arguments I have ever seen. It makes literally no sense.

Like most die-hard comic fans, you have no idea what makes a personality. "Making an armor" and "creating a company" are not giant personality determinators, anon.

They are part of what the character does, but what actually matters for a rp is why she does it, how she does it, and how she interacts with others before, during, and after.

And that can be changed either tremendously or more subtly by a genderswap.

But keep confusing some facts of a character's history with personality, lol.

The point.

Your head.

Congrats, I guess.

if you don't think a character's personality is related to their history you must be a pretty shitty player whether you're playing genderswaps or not

don't need to be a comics fan to see that, you just need to not be clueless

What is this bullshit? You sound like the kind of person who thinks we can't reclaim misogynist slurs for our own use.
