Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

Big and Scary Villains of Mass Destruction

(Anonymous) 2013-07-02 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a character I'd really like to pick up, but the fact that they are a big and obvious villain with a penchant for fucking people up and also can turn roughly the size of a football field is kind of worrying me. I'd like to do all of those things and more but.... not break the game. or anyone else's fun while I'm at it.

any tips, tricks, or games that are suitable for this kind of villainy to recommend?

in b4 depowered games. the character in question is really useless without their powers. I've played them depowered before, and it was fine, but I'd like them to be at least semi-powered if I play them again.

yeah, i'm prepared for that (and actually really enjoy it), it's more of the ic aspect i'm worried about mismanaging, balancing 'kill all the everything' with 'don't break the game'

Talk to the mods in advance! For big, potentially game-breaking stuff you're going to need to get mod approval anyway, and they can help you pick schedules that work and suggest changes if what you're planning is too big or breaks important stuff. It's a good idea to pick a game with mods who are really open to player plot if you're going to app a hardcore villain type, and those are usually the kinds of mods who love working with players on big plotty murder-and-destruction type of stuff.

Also, be open to ic consequences of your plots -- if it's a game with a player-run police force, talk to them. Same goes with hero types. You may end up with a glut of people wanting to heroically kill your character if there's enough devastation and murder involved, and working out some kind of endgame (character is pursued, fights with hero-types, is killed, stays under the radar for a while when coming back from the dead, for example) can help leave everyone involved in the plot with that warm glow of satisfaction.

Similarly, don't be so concerned about what is IC for your character that you can't tone them down to the extent necessary to match the game environment. ICness is important, but sometimes a character is either unplayable or incredibly obnoxious to have in a game without some tweaking (someone like Lina Inverse, who blows up whole towns when her dinner isn't good, for example, might need to choose less destructive ways of expressing frustration in a game.) This doesn't mean your character should be completely toothless -- just that destructive villains who insist every sassy teenager who tags them WILL die in a fire get obnoxious real quick. Compromise is king.

Obviously, you'll want to pick a game where you don't have to do much tweaking, but you're almost guaranteed to need to do a little.

Plan it as a temporary character. If you want to go in and have the character fuck everyone's shit up, you need to be prepared for there to be serious consequences, and for a character like you describe, those consequences will probably leave them unplayable afterward. Which is okay - it can be tremendously fun to play a scenery-chewing badass villain for a relatively short while, then have them have their downfall and go do other things.

If you want long term staying power (or at least want staying power without infuriating both your fellow players and the mods who have to field their frustration), it's usually better to go with either a low-key villain or one who can wreck shit and plausibly blame it on someone/something else.

Or depower, but you already know that.
