Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

GENERAL ADVICE - DOCTORS

(Anonymous) 2013-03-22 03:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm thinking of picking up a doctor character from a modern-day setting but have no idea how to handle the jargon and overall medical knowledge that doctors have at their disposal. I know that most RPers aren't doctors and won't know the difference, so some fudging is okay, but does anyone else have any more advice on playing this kind of character?

Research. You have the whole internet at your fingertips, so there's no excuse not to do at least enough research not to fuck up the basics. If you're playing a character who isn't a pompous ass in canon, you can actually avoid a lot of jargon, since the character probably won't always be on the job, and will probably mostly be communicating with people for whom layman's terms are a necessity.

Most people will let you handwave basic medical procedures, but it's really helpful to know what to do if your character gets called in to deal with an emergency, because it can definitely add something to a scene if you're not just textbook step-by-stepping it. Also it means you won't look like an asshole for getting something wrong.

But like the above anon said- most of the time playing doctor characters is no different from playing anyone else and for anything else, research is your friend.

if you're not willing to research it don't go into any detail because seeing people toss around bad medical advice is way more annoying than seeing people screw up something harmless.

if the doctor character is from a specific field (Surgery, Pediatrics, etc) focus your research on that area as so not to make the glaringly obvious mistakes, and if possible, lurk on some forums those in the medical field often visit - it gives an idea of what their general knowledge is and how they discuss such issues.
