Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Temporary Change: To reduce the strain on Dreamwidth's servers new entries will go up when a post reaches 3,000. Please refrain from spamming so we can stretch these entries for a little longer. We don't need several threads soliciting photo evidence of body parts, and we already know that we only care about yaoi. Failure to comply will only result in deletions and butthurt. "People may notice site slowdown/cache error pages. We're working on fixing. You can help: finish posts at 3k comments, not 5k or more." - Dreamwidth@Twitter

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

Clint Barton | MCU

(Anonymous) 2012-05-17 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I know, I know. There are already plenty of MCU people running around, but oh well. General tips, things to avoid, etc. would all be very welcome!

Also, it's been a while since I've read any comics with Hawkeye in them, so I'll gladly take recs regarding specific issues or arcs that I should brush up.

please, for the love of christ, remember that he is not comics-canon hawkeye. he was not in the circus, he probably wasn't a villain, and he is not all wisecracky. if anything, movies hawkeye is based on ultimates hawkeye in terms of personality and background. he's a lot drier and more professional than most people have been playing him. i haven't read the comics in forever, but there was a comic-recs-for-the-movie-players thread a couple of discussion posts back. try checking there to see if anyone's got hawkeye recs?

sorry if this sounds bitchy, but the vast majority of movie hawkeyes i've seen have been doing it wrong.

[General] Playing "charming" types.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-17 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I have this character who has a tendency to, well, charm women. He's the sort of guy that says of things to make them swoon. But it's not to say he's an outright flirt though, since he just sort of attracts girls without even meaning to. It just sort of flows naturally to him... which is a problem for me, since anon fails at flirting without sounding too cheesy. Help me out, fellow anons?

(Anonymous) 2012-05-17 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends on what kind of women he tends to be able to charm. For a stereotypically "charming" guy, usually he is polite, sincere, and complimentary in a way that comes across as honest--which is what makes him charming. He also is usually smiles a lot and is capable of making people feel at ease because he is comfortable with himself and can avoid saying most things that are outright disturbing or might make people uncomfortable. If he touches a nerve he'll probably notice and apologize in a sincere way, but won't throw himself down on their mercy melodramatically.

Also, most charmers are natural flirts. They don't have to do it consciously, there's just a tinge of innuendo in what they say because they enjoy being playful. And a good way to play a charmer is to make sure when they say something they do it lightly, but with a hint of...inclusion. They want the other person to feel like they can be in on the joke, too, but maybe it's just between the two of them. Something special. You don't have to use a lot of puns or innuendo. Sometimes the inflection and body language of the character is more than enough.

But foremost: playful honesty. Guys that come across as sincere because they mean all the nice things they say, but not so open they're a book to anyone who comes across them is a good way to handle a stereotypical charmer. The hint of mystery can make other characters curious, but they become comfortable around the guy anyway. A lot of charmers come across as really enjoying life, or maybe being involved in The Game of Life that they just might be willing to let other people in on.

I know this isn't concrete specifics, but it's kind of hard to pin down exactly how to act like a charmer since characters can be charming in a variety of ways. I hope it does help though.

First anon gave some good advice. The only thing I can think to add is don't play him with the expectation of that reaction from others. Canon characters removed from their canon are always going to get different reactions from others than they receive in canon because they're being taken out of a world crafted with them in mind.

For example, Buffy out of the Buffy-verse might still be tough, but there are many other canons with characters who make hers seem like normal humans are to her. She isn't going to be the toughest kid on the block in a jamjar that allows powers. She shouldn't be played with the expectation that she is, and OOC expectations often come through IC behavior.

Study what makes him charming to the characters in his canon, bring those qualities to the RP, but don't get flustered if he's not as charming out of his canon world as he is in it.

above anon

(Long-haired) Luke | Tales of the Abyss

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Besides 'don't make him too much like his post-Important Haircut self.'

Discussion may contain spoilers!

Re: (Long-haired) Luke | Tales of the Abyss

(Anonymous) 2012-05-18 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
The main thing to remember about pre-haircut Luke is that he has less emotional development than other adults due to essentially being seven years old, give or take. Until Tear broke into the manor, his world had always revolved around him, and that shows in his (lack of) social grace and empathy.

Consider when Tear gave up her pendant to safely see Luke back home. The depth of that gesture is completely lost on him; not once does he consider its importance to her. But it isn't that Luke is unkind, he just has never put himself in another's shoes. He never had to. Servants and family alike pampered him from the time he was born to make up for his being under house arrest.

I'll try to think of more points later, but I hope this helps for now! :)

Don't make him a constant un-evolving brat just because he's long-hair. He's bratty because he's ignorant and he's constantly encouraged to be ignorant or completely brushed off by those around him. Which also feeds a bunch into his attitude.

Biggest thing I can say really though is he does care when he notices things (unlike the other characters he asks Jade about his condition later on after the Tartarus events, his treatment of Ion is more considerate of Ion's feelings than the others' in a lot of places, etc). The more you have him in a game, the more he's going to grow and notice things and, unless you're in a game with a bunch of major assholes, grow as a person. In the manor the servants were discouraged from talking to him and he was discouraged from being friendly with them so it was a stagnant world. This is not going to be the case in a game.

Depending on who his CR is he can either grow into being a better person or a shittier one. Really up to your discretion.

Anything would be greatly appreciated as he's a character type I'm not used to playing. No canon point decided yet, though I'm mainly going to base things off the anime and movie and supplementing with what game translations and manga I can find.

Taking her from post SWR; any advice in general would be cool, especially with her general personality and how she might react to being put in places like Jamjars or something like that.

That, and how the Lunar War might've effected her.

GENERAL: picking up new canon

(Anonymous) 2012-05-21 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I got into a new canon quite recently (early April?) and it's like the best thing and I totally want to play from it. But I'm slightly intimidated to do so, as mostly everyone else who RPs from there has been around for years and obviously has a much firmer grip on things. I'm concerned that this intimidation might result in death of the drive, and I definitely do not want to be flaking.

While I do not have a history of that (I rarely app and I rarely drop; I've only dropped one character quickly before and that was mostly to schedule reasons), I do feel that maybe my current excitement is heavily influenced by the fact that it is a new thing.

How long do you normally wait for such things to settle before you can make an objective decision? Do you start immediately or wait several weeks after finishing the series to make sure you've got the right voice down?

All opinions are appreciated!

(General) Writing realistic conversations

(Anonymous) 2012-05-24 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, so... I'm not sure how to explain my exact problem, but I'll give it my best shot. :|a

I've been roleplaying for while now, but mostly in a first person journaling/"letter writing" style. I do roleplay on lj and dw and have been doing so for several years, but the style (what I'd describe as short snippets of conversations being exchanged back and forth?? idek) is still a little difficult for me. I tend to overthink my tags and try to cram too much into them when "normal" conversations (which most tags your typical lj/dw game mimic pretty well, imho) aren't really like that. The basic result is that my tags end up coming out clunky and awkwardly dense.

Anyway, not sure how much sense that made, but tl;dr how do I teach myself to write realistic conversations and not overthink my tags so much?
