The culture's definitely shifted. For me, it's largely been for the better; more mellow when it comes to the creative side, but less tolerant when it comes to shitty behaviour OOC. As always, though, a ton of that depends on just who you're talking to and where you're playing. The easiest way to jump in now is bakerstreet, but it's pretty hit or miss. (One thing I do pine for is open museboxes/dressing rooms.) A lot of games have pretty elaborate TDMs, too.
It's just as multi-fannish, even if the fandoms themselves are different. How easy it is to get CR with a lesser known character varies as much as it always has.
