You don't really need to explain anything to anyone. A quick "hi, sorry, life stuff happened, are you still interested?" is fine. Some people are fine with that, some won't bother but remind yourself not to take it personally. Anyone who tries to shame you over it would just be making an ass of themselves and not worth wasting your energy on anyway.
