when my character runs into a character from media he most definitely would be familiar with, i avoid the 4th wall by having my character know an "alternate" version of the canon with the same plot but the details, title and character names are tweaked to be slightly different. that way i can avoid having my character know too much plus i just think it's funnier that way.
