I was really lucky in that when I started grad school my advisor was very open/supportive when I told her I did not want to be an academic and she didn't take that as some moral failing like I think some advisors do. She was actually crucial in connecting me to my current supervisor. Obviously the pay is always going to lag behind industry and there's always going to bureaucratic and political frustrations, but I think government work is a really solid option.
