more than once i've been in games with "popular" players who, to my knowledge, were never anything but friendly and nice in all their interactions but who had one or two people who HATED them. the only complaints they could muster (if they even bothered to explain themselves) were that they were cliquey or they were too involved or something similarly anodyne issue. every single time it just came off like they were just bitter about not being popular themselves.

and before an anon who can't read inevitably jumps in: yes, sometimes popular players can be wanky or rude behind the scenes, this was not the case in these instances that i knew of.
