how do you pick who to tag in memes when you're canonblind? i mostly play lcws and would like to tag out more, but i never know where to start with characters i know nothing about. google only gets me so far.

really depends on the meme. also a lcw most of the time, so I same hat. I don't like assumed CR so just jumping on someone in a vague fluff/smut meme would require a lot of journal-checking, googling, and thinking before I found someone compatible so I'm a lot less likely to tag any canon I'm blind to for those. but on tfln, ama, etc where the toplevel is the prompt, I'll go in blind as fuck and tag anyone who looks fun or has something in the starter that my character would engage. once in a while there's a meme where people do put more info, preferences, links to their kinks and permissions, etc in their toplevels, it's easier to skim those even if no tags come out of it because at least you're getting some ideas to go off of.

honestly, if the base summary of who the character is sounds like they'd click well with one of mine, that's genuinely all i need. tbh it's all anyone should need. i don't need multiple paragraphs about them, i just need a basic idea of their personality and what their deal is.

that's all it is, miles. a leap of faith.

is it normal for your rp partner to be privately excited by your ship but be really standoffish about it in the game's public discord?

when i share fanart or fanfic of our ship in dms they seem really happy, want to talk about it, come up with funny thread ideas or things to handwave. but if i share it it publicly they just go, 'oh hm. guess that's them.' or don't comment with anything at all. they never talk about our ship on plurk either.

i don't think i'm being particularly obnoxious about it in public, and other players also share cute pics of their characters and ships in the game discord. i just feel like they're embarrassed of me or something and it makes me feel bad.

It depends on the person. I personally don't like talking about my ships or sometimes my character in public spaces, but I love it one-on-one. Some people are just really private regardless of how common it is for others to do that.

You can ask them about their preferences! Some people might not realize they're sending mixed signals.

I’m self conscious about talking much about my ships in public because I’ve gotten flack for it before. If you’re having fun privately, maybe that’s just the space they’re most comfortable in.

there are a lot of reasons this could be that have absolutely nothing to do with you or the ship, but in particular it sounds like they might share that game/public space with someone they don't particularly like. since a lot of us have been kicking around for a good 10 years or so, it's more likely than you think.

and honestly some people just don't like the attention. if they're engaging with you one on one and enthusiastic about your tags, then it's probably not about you.

Personally, I find it annoying when people spam up a general game Discord with gushing over their ship, so I don't do it myself.

kind of DWRP adjacent but does anyone here use plurk cliques to keep friends from different games separate? I want to be able to talk about my games but I'm conscious that some people find it annoying to constantly see plurks about games they're not in

i think it's generally more annoying to get pinged/get an email notif than leaving the onus on the other person to mute and move on if they don't want to read about a game they aren't a part of

only a real asshole would begrudge you talking about games you're in on your own plurk? just label your plurks and keep the number you make her day reasonable, like with any other topic. constant private plurks, in comparison, actually *are* annoying.

I use plurk savior to filter and auto mute plurks with the emotes of games I'm not in so I don't really care. I think getting email notifs and constant "are you sure you want to maar when there's a private plurk?" warnings is more annoying.

hello! i usually play on ij but interested in dipping my toes into dwrp panfan but i'm confused about terminology and culture.

- is plurk like a browser based chatroom? is it usually required for games or do some people use discord?

- i've lurked in some games and notice people usually [put actions in brackets] and then dialogue outside when responding to entries. are all the characters in a journal entry implied to be in a room interacting with each other? or is it just for flavor to explain a character's thought process, but nobody can actually hear them laughing and making hand gestures?

- are prose replies generally frowned upon? i noticed most people use the bracket style to rp, but i saw a couple of people responding with prose. are both usually accepted, or are prose rpers seen as going against the grain?

- i saw some games have like... a big post where people post different starter prompts and other people reply to them. but then i see multiple people replying to the same prompt. is this AU where these scenes happen on different timelines so all these characters can have approached so-and-so when they were having a crisis, or is this just a detail people handwave for the sake of rp?

thank you for reading all my questions! i'd love other general advice and dwrp newbie tips too.

- plurk is basically horizontal twitter. it's not required but it does help to have both plurk & discord if you really want to network ooc and icly. but again: not required, just not having it does make plotting a little harder sometimes.

- depends. most posts will indicate if it's action or video/voice. often our games have "network devices" which vary by game but are usually like, magical or technological cellphones so characters don't have to be in the same room to chat. if it's action it's just prose with fancy writing and people are for sure in the same place.

- you can do either. some people do refuse to use anything but brackets but some people also refuse to use anything but prose. in my experience most of us are willing to match formats if our partners have a strong preference. i would say brackets are slightly more common these days compared to prose?

- we're not fussed about timelines mostly. in games we have event posts - those big posts - and write toplevels with a variety of options for people to respond to. just fudge the timelines mentally and enjoy yourself, no one will make a big deal about which was "real" because they all were. if it's something you only want to play once you can say it's closed to the first respondent in the header or you can lock it to someone specific.

- plurk is more of a micro-blogging platform. kind of like twitter, but not (i say, as someone that doesn't use twitter lmao). you add people to your timeline and interact with them that way. it's absolutely not required, although ymmv with regards to how much you can really settle into a game without it — depends on the game and the players. i feel like discord has taken away a lot of the perceived necessity that plurk used to have.

- "all characters in a journal entry" - network posts? it depends on whether it's action/video, or text/audio — the former is dressed up (or down, depending on how you look at it) prose, where the actions etc. are absolutely video, whilst for the latter, they're absolutely there just to add flavour and give more context.

in terms of responses: unless it's marked 'private', it's generally considered that the responses are visible to all player characters viewing the entry, however it's a good idea to check permissions and check in with other players before thread-jacking or assuming that information given in responses are free to run with for other player characters. most of the time, it's fine, BUT.

- nah, brackets and prose are equally accepted. fwiw, i feel like a few years ago prose was less accepted than it is now, but it feels like as we've got older, we've just kind of gone 'fuck it, it's fine, you do you'. brackets are (anecdotally) more common, imo, but it definitely depends on the circles you run in.

- absolutely a detail that people handwave for the sake of rp. for example, if i put up an open prompt and have 5 people reply to the same one, i'll keep the gist of the conversation but handwave the finer details of the exact with regards to the start of the thread (which is generally why they're quite generic), as all five threads are likely to develop in quite different ways.

for me, personally, if it's something that's important as far as game plot and character development goes, i'll make it either a closed top level (or log) to a particular character, or i'll state that the prompt is closed to X number of responses.

some of these answers are probably going to be a ymmv thing, so you may get slightly different answers from different players!

Which game would y'all say is most newbie-friendly? I've done some PSLs and memes but not any games before. Size isn't a factor for me, but I think I'd like something fairly active. I have a lcw I'd be looking at apping if that helps any.

Apps just closed but databurst has been getting newbies and returnees and seems to be doing well. The mod pays a lot of attention to feedback and acts on them immediately, the game is fairly active and AC is simple enough.

I've been wanting to get more into DWRP for a while now but my honest impression is that it's just full of drama and toxicity. Of course, I can't imagine I'm doing myself any favors by browsing places like anon comms, but every time I find an exciting new game it turns out there's some history of drama behind it, and I feel discouraged from joining places like Plurk because of how much infighting there is. Am I completely mistaken or is this just how the platform is?

In general, is there a time limit for how late a tag can be before the thread should just be dropped? I have tags that are several weeks old I finally have time and motivation to get back to, but our game's already moved on to its new event and the tags aren't with close CR or anything. Is it weird to hit them up this late?

Hi, nonnies. I wanted to ask, how do you feel about RPing with animal characters (specifically in games) provided they are intelligent and expressive enough to really engage with? Not doing a great job keeping myself anon here, but the two muses I have and think would be really fun are Toothless, and Amaterasu from Okami. Both are very expressive, intelligent, understand human speech (hell, Ammy is literally a goddess in a wolf’s body), and have pretty fleshed out and workable personalities. There’d be some things I’d be limited on but I think both of these muses could be a ton of fun to throw at people and could actually get some nice CR! I’ve never played an animal character on DWRP before so I’m just wondering if this would be a turn-off for a lot of players or if you would enjoy writing with a character like this? Thanks!
