not even super-observant or empathic characters who might have some excuse

no just random characters going "i met you five minutes ago and i can tell that even though you put a brave face on it you are still in mourning for your dead girlfriend, let me console you" and then i'm the bad player when my character is weirded out instead of being charmed by their perceptiveness and loving sympathy

How do you read books?

I have to wonder how you deal with reading books that don't have any illustrations of the characters. Often they'll describe the characters in the text and leave it up to your imagination to visualize them based on that.

That said, is there a text version of their physical description in their app or journal? Or any canon or fan art pictures of them? If so, you could go off those. Poorly chosen PBs can be misleading and aren't helpful.

I kind of agree with this, if only because that's generally the sort of format used here in journal RP, and icons are one of the reasons we're here instead of on a forum.

but i agree. i don't want to have to go hunting for your rambling, inarticulate writeup of your character's facial structure when a handful of icons could circumvent the entire issue. and rping without any icons to speak of at all is so unheard of in lj/dw rp it's practically a cardinal sin.

i want a game where a random character is chosen each month by an AI or something to be the city's ~~savior~~ and get a mech to fight city-destroying, climactic battles with giant attacking whatevers or other mechs.

except the mech runs off the pilot's blood or something, basically functioning like a dialysis machine - so when the monster ends up beaten and it's time to get out, they die and have to be reapped. if the pilots suck and lose to the monster, someone else gets picked - and that's two people that ended up dying that day, or possibly even more. so being picked would be simultaneously awesome and a death sentence, and everybody else has to clean up after the fight and hope they and their loved ones don't get picked. and there'd be intrigue and opportunities to figure out why the things are attacking, explore the mysteriousness surrounding the AI, and a bunch of other mystery shit, so people could keep busy.

it'd be like Big O and The Lottery combined. and it would be awesome.

the requirement of icons. not trying to be purposefully contrary to anon above, but goddamn, icons are such a pain in the ass. i really really miss the days of RP where you just needed a default icon and maybe one other, and no one gave a shit.

there's a lot of characters i want to play from books [that haven't been made into movies], and there's a few OCs i want to play, but i can't because fucking icons. no, PBs don't work. unless you're playing a contemporary real-world character, PBs don't work.

oh right, and it'd be in a semi-futuristic jamjar city - as in giant robots and intelligent AIs, but the average civilian who doesn't hold office or a seat of power or anything has access to technology more like our 70s-80s era unless they stole something better.
