Ruth Downie's ancient Rome mystery novels starting with Medicus are pretty great, too! Have not read the Didius Falco books but am going to have to pick them up -- they sound just my speed.

Have you read the Benjamin January novels? Especially the first eight or so? Absolutely brilliant books, highly recommended. The setting is 1830s New Orleans, the hometown of the protagonist, where he returns after his wife's tragic death in Paris of cholera.
