idk, i can see mulan being interpreted in a few different ways. in addition to saber, lancer, and berserker, you can also make arguments for rider and maaaybe caster (though that one is a huge stretch, even with the sweet magical attacks she used in some versions of the legend).

el nysa still has a lot of characters and momentum. i think there's about 300 some characters in the game or something? mods put on app caps now.

people are having a lot of fun in it. i dropped because it's way too big for me and for a few other reasons, so if you're waiting for it to get smaller you'll probably be waiting a few more months. if you're thinking about joining though i say give it a shot. both major factions have been introduced now so hopefully some of the games faction-based elements will start coming into play.

the worst that happens is you don't like it or you miss the app-cap boat and that gives you even more time to see the game thin out, if it does at all.

since we (i guess i shouldn't say 'we' anymore) haven't experienced the new rule change yet, it's hard to say but i'd wager it'd be hard to get in unless you're hitting submit right on the minute apps open.

i see the mods making changes and accommodating the game's size as best as they possibly can. i get the impression they never expected it to blow up so big and fast, and the game's structure feels like it's designed to work better/be more manageable with a smaller population.

yeesh. well, im glad it's one app per person and there's a limit to total characters apped. makes me feel brand new players might have a better chance getting in.

how many drops per ac round do you guys tend to have? (sorry for asking all this stuff here im on mobile and keep getting redirect errors on the actual game pages haha)

redirects suuuuck. logging in helps with that, but that's also a pain on mobile, so i feel you.

i like crunching statistics in games for funsies so it's no problem! these are pretty rough since I counted quick and nysa's mods are very good about keeping their lists clean, so if there's any discrepncies i apologies but it's probably only off by a one or two numbers.

August we had 188 characters in the game, lost 10 to drops/not submitting AC. that's ~5%

September I'm not sure how many characters we had total but according to the mods we had +138 apps in September's round (I'm not sure if that was a total character amount or 188 + 138 but I assume the latter) so including the drops that'd put it at 316 characters total for September, with 27 lost to drops/not submitting AC. that's ~9%

Running down the taken list as of right now, there's 198 characters total in the game, with 127 currently checked into AC, 26 on hiatus (1 exception), 2 unprocessed drops. any other drops I can't verify since they would have already been processed and removed from the page (case in point: mine isn't on there anymore). So that really puts us at ~50 - ~70 unaccounted for. there's still 9 hours left in AC so I feel like most of those people will check in. if i had to make a prediction, i'd guess between 20-40 drops at the most for October. that'd be ~10%-~20%. i really expect it to be on the low end of that.

so you can see there's been comparatively few drops and still a very large, active population of characters maintained in nysa.

how would you feel about a game that:

1) has no ooc community, no or few ooc plotting posts (players could still plot and talk about whatever on their plurks or discord if they wanted but there would be little to no official venue for it).

2) all information about the world/plot/events is delivered IC via NPCs or via narrations in event logs

3) if players or characters have questions about things, they have to pursue them in an ic manner (either asking npcs or threading in certain environment which may trigger mods to reply ICly)

4) which means there would be a heavy element of mod npcs interacting with pcs, and those mod npcs would be treated just like like any other pc, coming with sufficient backstory and personality. or in lieu of an actual npc the mods could reply with a narration description, like a dm would to a tabletop game and would describe what the characters might discover.

5) only infrequent exceptions being if a player has a question/is in a situation that would be ooc of their character and the answer would affect what the player decides to do with the character

i guess the best comparison to it would be running a dwrp game more like a tabletop game except there's no dice rolls for things and ooc chatter/questions for the dm are kept at a minimum.

my hope is that maybe this kind of style of game would encourage less talking about rping and more doing, less getting stuck in plotting and never actually threading things out, and encourage more spontaneity, creativity, and engagement with the game setting

every time someone tries to do this "more like a tabletop game" crap it is an absolute trainwreck and what you're proposing sounds like a total shitshow, not to mention clique central

you're not going to stop people talking about rping, you're just going to make it so that people only talk to their friends in private venues while other people who aren't their buddies get excluded

besides that, one of the key elements of a tabletop game is that everyone who's playing it is in the same place at the same time, so when one person declares an action, everyone else in the party has the opportunity to know about it and react right then. nothing is walled off by timezone differences or work schedules or other commitments. that shit has already been sorted in advance when everyone agreed when the next session would be

tabletop games don't have less communication. they have in the moment communication between everyone involved. dw games need some degree of ooc communication structure because we're not all sitting in the same damn room together reacting to shit that goes down at the same time

i'd feel sorry for the mods, tbh. that would be a huge pain in the ass.

rpers already have a complex about not being able to write a scene without all the answers spoon-fed to them. this would likely result in game paralysis after a week. especially if the mod(s) get overwhelmed for threads. add a couple flakes who try to hoard IC info while not tagging back for days and you've got a hot mess on your hands.

i get what you're going for, but the reason it works in tabletop is that everyone is there at the same time as the mod, and all the answers are being heard by everyone. journal rp doesn't have that helpful immediacy. there's a high chance of player/mod burn-out. idk maybe if you ran it like a limited time murder game and had a really strict policy of dropping players when they start to flake it might work. otherwise, DW rp nature is a hard current to go against.

even if you do get it going like you want, you still run the risk of some players getting butthurt if they don't have their characters get the answer from the NPC before other ones, or if some NPC threads get dropped while others don't. that would be hell for a mod.

maybe i'm wrong and it might turn out to be great with the right players/mods. who knows.

I think your best bet to get this to actually work and to save the sanity of the mod/mod team would be to have a very small group of people involved in a closed community. Which, again, is how tabletop works anyway. You generally don't have dozens of people playing at once. If you had enough people interested in the idea to do a short campaign to see how the format works, I think it would be worth a go.

-depending on which point you take her from her character will be very different. for anything not within the last couple of episodes...

-please note that she is very manipulative! she sets up situations to make herself look good, is able to sway most people, and is skilled on putting on a 'caring teacher' front. please note that this is all pretty fake, even if she does care about some of her students everything is secondary to her obsession with chariot and plans

-yeah, that chariot obsession. it's not just jealousy, croix still cares for her and keeps close tabs on her. you'll note that in the flashbacks, after croix says 'I can't help you anymore" and leaves in a huff once chariot finds out her deception re: dream spirit magic, she still watches chariot's shows and erases people's memories when chariot shoots the moon. she was also watching akko for months before she became a teacher

-her motivations aren't just about jealousy - she does genuinely want to bring magic back to the level it was and her plans, however underhanded and horrible, are ultimately to achieve this. however, the reason she didn't get the shiny rod was because she wanted to be the best witch in the world, which was ultimately a selfish desire, while chariot just wanted to make people happy

-pride and hubris are a big part of her character! in the finale her plans go out of control and she can't stop what she's started, and she's shocked. so yeah, maybe her pride prevented her from really considering what she was doing was stupid af, but also consider that a lot of her plans, while meticulous, aren't all that well thought out. like tricking chariot into using dream spirit magic. so yeah, she has grand manipulative plans, but she doesn't think about how they can fail or backfire

-which is especially funny considering she really plays the long game... it took years for her to put her stuff into motion

-when she's not being ~evil, she basically sits around sciencing to late hours of the night and eating nothing but ramen..... this lady doesn't exactly have healthy habits

-her relationship with chariot is like central to her character, it's been a huge part of her motivation to do anything and her reason for redemption at the end of the series. it's an obsession born of genuine affection & love mixed in with a lot of other things, and she's gay af for chariot imo. HOWEVER part of her insane jealousy (which she tried to suppress at first, even) comes from her teacher never acknowledging her (or so she feels anyway), so it isn't JUST about chariot

-having all that said croix is still capable of making real connections with ppl, doing altruistic things, and having a ~redemption arc, but part of that redemption in the show is her being forced to acknowledge the damage her actions did and have it backfire on her mixed in with forgiveness she didn't deserve. it's development that'd be harder to replicate in an rp setting but still possible through humility and shit going sideways for her

-also! very smart and talented and passionate about magic! she really did think that her technology and research would help with the decline of magic, it wasn't just for the ~evuls

this is my feeling on it too. it's a good chance to grab some cr with characters you've been wanting some with or develop some baby cr into something more, and that's the only reason i would make any requests.

you're absolutely right, anon. in fact mods in both my games say "please ask in the post so everyone can see it" when someone tries to ask stuff in mod plurks.

talk to the player first, maybe it was an honest mistake. if they don't take it well then yeah go to the mods.
