RPGMaker Games

I've been playing a lot of these lately. What are your favorites, and do you have any recommendations? I'd love to play more horror games!

Ib and The Witch's House are the two best RPGmaker horror games. Ao Oni is fun but repetitive. Misao and Mad Father (the latter is a sequel/spiritual successor to the former) are good ideas with poor execution (and sexual assault). The Crooked Man and its various companion games are pretty spoopy but somewhat lacking in compelling story. I can't think of many more off the top of my head that were any good or particularly memorable. Blank Dream is kind of horror-y I guess.

As far as non-horror games, the LiEat series is really cute, although I'm not sure it's available for free anymore (the collection recently went up on Steam). It has unsettling moments but it's not a horror series. Star-Stealing Prince is an amazing traditional RPG, as is Capella's Promise. Pom Gets Wifi is an entertaining parody that ends up being a really endearing game in its own right. To the Moon is another game made in RPGM that ended up on Steam, it's lovely and you will cry yourself to death.

I love Ib and Blank Dream! I'm also a huge fan of Uri's games (the creator of Crooked Man and such) but Mermaid Swamp is by far my fave of hers. Misao was decent but I agree that the execution of it was pretty poor.

I haven't heard or played the other games save for To the Moon, though! Thanks for the recs.

I definitely recommend Stray Cat Crossing, which is a horror game along the same vein of Ib and Witch's House

anon above you

I forgot about SCC! That's another Steam one, for the record, but all the Steam RPGMs are pretty cheap.

I don't really have any horror recs, but can still rec a few fun ones. All of these are on Steam.

Valiant: Resurrection - Until I played this game, I never would have thought you could have a game around 10 hours that has really good world-building. Reminded me of Lufia 2 as well in some ways.

OH RPG! - A really unique little gem. Basically it's a short little game where you play as NPCs in a world where the heroes failed against the big bad and the world is going to come to an end.

Skyborn - You'll be shocked that this one is RPG Maker, because it doesn't look it. Really neat setting and while the story is nothing special, it has enjoyable characters and world-building.

Epic Quest of the 4 Crystals - Pretty funny little game and while it seems cliche at first, it ends up having a twist about halfway in that was interesting enough that I couldn't stop playing the game.

Greyfox - Really short and sweet little game that has a very unique premise.

Silver Creek Falls - a very nice little murder mystery game. First chapter is free so you can try it before you buy it as well.

The Deed - I haven't personally played this one yet, but I hear amazing things about it. Basically in this one you try to get away with murder.

I've also enjoyed nearly every game by Aldorlea and Roseportal games. Really the only RPG Maker games I've played on Steam and didn't outright enjoy were Secret of Magia and The Chosen RPG. Everything else was pretty fun and most of these are just the ones I enjoyed the most or in the case of the Deed are just really unique.

Just looked this up and this game looks incredible! It never ceases to amaze me what people can do with RPGMaker.

Thanks!

How has no one mentioned OFF yet? Absolutely beautifully done surrealistic horror(?) game, has a really interesting world and really is on the nose with how it plays with the RPGMaker/RPG game genre! I highly recommend it, it's such an experience (and the music and character designs are top notch).

we probably remember when OFF was a fad canon for all of five minutes

I'm honestly amazed it was a fad canon, because it's just such a weird bird compared to most of the fad canons I've seen come and go in the past.

Definitely don't let the (past) hype detract from it - it is a really solid game and has a feel and look that make it incredibly unique.

I forgot about OFF. Oh my god. I completely forgot. I am a bad fan. All my recommendations are null and void. Holy shit.

as someone who rps the batter, seeing this thread made me really happy. definitely play OFF, op! it's so utterly insane and strange and compelling.

While I haven't managed to get the true ending just yet, I enjoyed playing Alice Mare (which is by the same person who made the LieEat games), and while it's not a horror game (and I..haven't managed to finish it yet), 1BitHeart is pretty cute. I've really enjoyed the parts of it that I've played.

While it has it's faults, End Roll was a really fun experience, and I really fell for nearly everyone in the story.

I haven't played too much of Free Spirits either, but I've liked what I've seen, so I'd recommend trying it out if you're looking for more games to play!

Hello? Hell..o? and Moonlight Ghost can be a bit silly sometimes, but they're pretty fun, spoopy horror games, so you might enjoy them.

It's Our Revolution! is a ridiculously fun, frustrating little game that's hard to put down, so I recommend that, even if it's not horror.

Liar Jeannie in Crucifix Kingdom is a hard, horror, dungeon-crawler game, but it's still difficult to put it down, and it's a ton of fun to play. And this is coming from someone who normally doesn't like games that are just dungeon crawlers.

Melon Journey isn't a horror game (it's a cute, fetch quest story), but I still have to recommend it because it's so adorable.

I can't honestly recommend Mogeko Castle or Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea, but I adore the characters, world, and story in The Grey Garden, so you should check that out whenever you get the chance, even if it is long.

I haven't finished it yet, but I've enjoyed what I've found in Oneshot so far, so you might like that one too! Though, please keep in mind that quitting or exiting the game outside of the three breaks it gives you kills off your character and starts you from the beginning, and the game acknowledges this.

While it's old and may not run correctly all the time, I really think it's worth everyone's time to check out Palette, since the story (and ending) is amazing. Cold and brutal, but still amazing.

The Mirror Lied is a weird, weird game, but it was made by the same people who made To The Moon, so you might want to check that out.

Very Pink Game is a cute little adventure about trying to meet up with an old friend of yours that moved away.

And finally, Wither is a horror game about regret and loss that's enjoyable.

Farethere City is by the maker of End Roll and it's cute and also occasionally terrifying, and the characters are wonderful, so I recommend it! It's not an RPG like End Roll, but more of a puzzle game thing.

Angels of Death is on Steam and is absolutely worth the $10.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-28 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
i finished end roll the other week and thoroughly enjoyed it. the game had a lot of flaws but i think overall it was a very interesting, different type of story.

haven't checked out farethere city yet. i saw the summary for it on vgperson's site and it didn't appeal to me very much, but i might try and give it a shot!
