Misunderstanding of what was going on during the Cell saga. One of the things that gets toted (beyond the fact that he was a "Absentee" which baring his extended space trip he really didn't need to take, where beyond his control really) as the best example was Goku completely misreading the situation about what type of fighter Gohan was and assuming he was like him. One that could kill his enemies, if it came down to it. One that liked to fight and battle for the thrill of it. Instead of the fighter he grew up to be which was for sport and fun.
And what people forget is that Goku was so shocked by this he panicked about how badly he misread this. About how he forgot to tell Gohan his plan. About how he get blinded by that year of training he had with him in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.
And they also forget before Gohan went to fight Cell Goku did ask him to save the world so that Gohan could still become a scholar, and he was okay with it.
