i'd say it's because more people are willing to accept gay people than accept bi people. so even if their friends/family/whatever aren't homophobic, that's no guarantee they aren't biphobic, and they might feel pressured to look like they're "picking a side" to avoid all the drama and bullshit and accusations of attention seeking, being a whore, being indecisive, etc.
