genius characters

aside from "google and more google" in regards to the subjects they know about, anyone have any tips on maintaining incredibly smart characters without getting exhausted and/or nervous? personality wise the one i'm thinking of in particular has more than enough flaws to make up for their intelligence, i know there needs to be a lot more to someone than their brains, and i'm not afraid to have them be flat out wrong. but at the end of the day i don't know how to carry a genius without feeling like i'm overstepping my bounds somewhere. and how much can i rely on "it's fiction" to handwave complicated things getting handled in a short amount of time?
