Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Characters who rarely speak

(Anonymous) 2016-08-04 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been considering trying out a character who's not mute, but they rarely speak. They're all about nonverbal communication (drawing things, too) and find writing degrading and often refuse to.

I'm concerned the lack of dialogue will make the thread boring and lack of clear communication will put people off, too.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-06 11:00 am (UTC)(link)
there are other creative ways to get around that, anon! for one thing, there is body language, looks - something different than dialogue that your partner can respond to. you'll probably need longer descriptions than you're used to, but body language can speak just as loud as words, and offer just as many hooks as someone who speaks out loud, if you put the effort in. good luck!

I played Amaterasu (main character from Okami, a white wolf with a lot of silly personality) for the better part of a year. I was given the option for her to talk when I apped, but I refused... there just didn't seem to be a way to give her dialogue without it killing the sort of character she has.

I think characters that don't have dialogue as part of their norm need to have a lot of personality. I doubt a shy, reclusive character works for something like that because there's not much to engage with. If the silent character is more proactive, though, and will more often initiate a thread of action, they'll do just fine.

But passive + mute is not a winning combination and you'll find basically no one to tag you.

lapis lazuli | steven universe

I've purposefully held off on apping her anywhere until we got more information. Seeing as recent episodes gave us a lot of meat about her backstory and motivations, she's caught my interest again.

I don't want to gloss over her failings and flaws, I don't want to woobify her, and I don't want to overblow her reactions toward the other gems, Crystal and otherwise.

Re: lapis lazuli | steven universe

(Anonymous) 2016-08-05 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
The only advice I can really offer is to remember she takes a long while to warm up to anyone who isn't Steven. She likes him, everyone else is tolerated on a sliding scale of not interested.

That said, hold off one more week. I can't go into details because spoilers but at least one Lapis-heavy episode is coming.

Man where do I even start? I've been wanting to play her for so long and I finally have the courage but I'm not sure how to nail down her characterisation yet, so any pointers would be really helpful.

do you know what canon point you're taking her from? She's changed a LOT since the show's start.

Lancer/Cu Chulainn | Fate/stay night

(Anonymous) 2016-08-06 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
How much do I take from the original myth vs. his in-story character?

Re: Lancer/Cu Chulainn | Fate/stay night

(Anonymous) 2016-08-08 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
if you're playing from a canon, you should quite obviously take canon as the primary source and anything else as secondary

which major contradictions between canon and myth is bothering you?

Re: Lancer/Cu Chulainn | Fate/stay night

(Anonymous) 2016-08-08 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It's good to know the myth for reference, but take it as basis for fun headcanon to play around with. Lancer explains his myth in Hollow Ataraxia, if I recall correctly, so I'd take his own explanation of it as the core base and everything else that sounds nice and fun to you for the rest.

Canon just honestly does whatever the fuck it wants so it already reconciles very poorly with the myth, but take the things that are consistent with the character and that you think would be fun to play with.

Re: Lancer/Cu Chulainn | Fate/stay night

(Anonymous) 2016-08-09 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, Cu's entire story has a profile page in the VN which is available online so you can see what fate/ augmented. Otherwise, you can just supplement with the myth.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-05 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who plays Zero!Rider, I feel you here. My best rule is simply to rely on Fate canon for anything that you can take, and if canon doesn't address the situation you're in, then turn toward myth/history. I would also use the myth to fill in his past relationships - have his reactions to people he meets be affected by people he's met in the past, in his legends, and this will make him seem like a much more rounded character.

Good luck, and I hope to see you out there!

Playing doctor

Any tips for playing a doctor? Any great resources for medical knowledge written in human speak?

The best advice i can give is dont get too technical with your writing. You can, and should, gloss over things you cant just find on google. It's rp so no one is going to know either way. I'm saying this as someone who plays an expert engineer. Half the time I make stuff up.

Alright, I'm going to try and be concise as possible and sorry if I get carried away. I've been around the block with dwrp Dorians and haven't found a lot of good ones. So, to start off with: he is not a trope flamboyant gay!! If you remember nothing else about Dorian Pavus, please remember this. So many fall into the limp-wrist-shitting-rainbows stereotype for Dorian and that is really wrong. Sure, he cares about fashion and cleanliness and sure he likes to be extravagant, but he's not one dimensional. At all. If you're writing him like Sassy Gay Friend, you are doing it 100% wrong.

Dorian isn't a liar, he just deflects. However, this doesn't mean that he does this all the time. For example: getting the letter about Felix, he is obviously very hurt over it, but dances around the subject enough so the focus is off of him and his feelings. Then later, once the Inquisitor has done enough to get the goods from Dorian, he still deflects but lets his feelings be known by either kissing him or allowing a kiss to happen (depending on which dialogue options you choose). There has to be a certain amount of trust and openness with the other person before Dorian will deflect less and even be honest.

Along the same lines: he's not an emotional cripple! It's all right there in the game that yes he's hesitant about entering a relationship with the inquisitor, but he is honest about his feelings. For a short time, at least. He is not afraid of relationships! What he wants is to be accepted and loved, even if he winds up telling his lover he hates them. It's constantly opposite day to Dorian. But, the point is, is that he grows as a person and adapts to a romantic situation without running away. (This happens so much in rp/fic for some reason.)

Dorian is nobility so he speaks properly. Sometimes it helps to rewatch his scenes or even just the conversation bits in Haven/Skyhold if you find yourself struggling. But, even though he's from nobility, that doesn't mean he doesn't curse now and then or get way too salty about shit. He's also incredibly flirtatious to anyone, no matter their gender. He's not a creep when he does it, which can sometimes be a hard balance to find. He's charming, not a fedora-toting neckbeard.

rin tohsaka

(Anonymous) 2016-08-12 12:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm taking an interested in the fate franchise but I'm so painfully new and I have no way of playing the games. Am I likely to get judged if I only play from the anime? If I really get into things, I don't mind watching lets plays though.

Anyway I'm pretty confused about the franchise in general. It's so huge and has so many alternate storylines. How do I even get started? And is there a route I can take where Rin/Shirou won't be canon ... (I'm not fond of it at all)

(Anonymous) 2016-08-12 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
They'll judge if they can tell. And Rin's one of the characters where you'll probably want to at least go through the F/SN Let's Plays because there's stuff in the other routes that'll be relevant to your interests.

For the part of the franchise you're looking at it's simpler than it looks. It's basically:

1. Fate/Zero

2. Fate/stay sight: Fate route, UBW Route, Heaven's Feel route

3. Fate/hollow ataraxia

So everything starts in Zero, for F/SN it splits into three alternate timelines, and then it converges for HA.

Literally everything else to the best of my knowledge is like 'what if a meteor crashed down on the Einzberns before the Holy Grail War was conceived?' so while they might be cool they're not the Rin you're looking at in terms of relevancy.

Re: rin tohsaka

(Anonymous) 2016-08-12 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
you need to play/watch/read the vn. this always ignites arguments here but it is not skippable for a character like rin, there's just too much in the routes themselves the anime series don't cover. just google for the picture-based LP and use that, it's the easiest and it skips the dumb sex scenes.

otherwise other anon had it right, f/zero -> fsn -> ha is the correct order, chronologically (though it's generally better to read fsn first because you'll be confused for a lot of zero). rin is one of the bigger characters so there's more you need to pay attention to, but she has a pretty straightforward personality that's easy to grasp IMO. just a lot of details, and you need to know the magic system inside and out since it's so critical to her character.

rin has a thing for shirou across the board. outside ubw it's more understated, but this isn't really a thing you can play around. you can certainly develop past it in games, especially if he's not present, but rin has Feelings and they won't go away right away. definitely don't take her from ubw, though, that's where those feelings are most prominent. you can kind of nudge around them in the others.

Re: rin tohsaka

(Anonymous) 2016-08-13 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Hey anon.

So, I feel like the two anons covered everything, but to make your life easier, here's a readable Let's Play: http://lparchive.org/Fatestay-night/

Focus yourself on getting through Fate/zero to understand the world and mage culture, as well as the circumstances that Rin was brought up in. The recent UBW anime is a nice intro to the visual novel, and it'll make perfect sense with Fate/zero's approach.

As for the alternative storylines: that's the beauty and downfall of this franchise. Everything is a canon AU because there are three routes, and it can get confusing fast. With Fate/stay night, the three primary routes all say something about Rin's character, and they're good to know to understand her better. I won't lie: the VN can be a slog. Nasu's prose isn't the best and the translation dosn't help. But it's needed.

As for your dislike of Rin and Shirou - the Fate route and Heaven' Feel route are both without that pairing, but as other anons have pointed out, the emotions are there in all of them.

Good luck.

There's a Mass Effect cast at Entranceway!

It's Tali, femShep, and Miranda, but I think there are a few other reserves.
