in the height of the video game rental period in most of the world, a lot of games were made intentionally difficult to extend the life of play so people would keep renting the game in order to beat it, rather than clear it in one rental period.
same reason why arcade games are classical difficult, too. it's not meant to reward the player, it's meant to reward the dev/publisher with more of your money.
