it evolved from the mun/muse desogmations that came in with people who got their start on other platforms where, for the most part, people didn't have ooc accounts and tended to be known primarily by which character the played. (some places used mun/pup(pet) to differentiate, but pup's largely fallen out of fashion here.)

"muse" has been pretty common rp parlance since at least the early 90s, when i got my start, and i wouldn't be all that surprised if it was in use before that - the "mun" part, at least, has definitely been a part of SCA/LARPer terminology for approximately forever as a shortening of "mundane". the visibility of soulbonders is a more recent phenomenon. they existed, but not in the numbers or at the volume necessary to influence early rp terminology.
