why do they need to know it exists right when they get here

if they just find it themselves then ask a friend or whatever "hey what is this" and get the response of "some stupid gossip comm most people don't pay that much attention to" i feel like it'd have a better reaction than "hi welcome to dreamwidth rp here's our wank comm! have fun!"
