i honestly don't believe they're unnecessary. hear me out before you blow me off.
WG - while the majority is shitstirring and very loud whining, there have been numerous instances of someone mentioning something that happened to them and finding out that they weren't alone, giving all those people the ground to stand on to deal with whoever was being a shit stain. unlike rpa, wg needs concrete proof and deets before it's taken as ipso facto, so while people can 'hi____' all they want, most people brush it off or call it out as grudgewank. you can't say 'so and so told me this' and have anyone believe you unless you provide proof. it's also been pretty good at sharing legitimate details about why things are closing/slow/what's happened to people. are there negatives? sure there are. there's always going to be petty bickering and sides taken on things, but as a whole, there's a legitimate reason for wg to be around. it doesn't NEED to move at a 1k+ rate per day. it's not a game. it doesn't need to be active. it just needs to be there so people have somewhere to go to contain their bitching/whining (hence the peeves threads).
RPA - graphics/html help, pb help, username suggestions, character discussion, game discussion, canon discussion, game ideas... all things that we have links to that are there for a reason. this is a place that we actually direct a lot of newcomers to (which is why there's a resource link) and where someone can be new and stupid, namelessly so that they don't carry a stigma around their rp career. outside of the trolling, there have been a lot of great discussions over canons and fandoms and new games and whatnot. i remember the discussions going on over a lot of games that lasted for quite a while being had here, fine-tuning how they'd want them to be opened and what they'd be about. people also come here to ask stupid questions, but as this is the random adhd comm, this is as good a place as any to talk about pee colors and poo consistencies and sleeping habits and hygiene (among less weird topics). it's sort of a free for all place to just come, find out things, and maybe waste some time.
the problem right now (and that has been) for both comms is the dedicated trolling. the ones that derail conversations, intentionally push buttons, post spoilers, and be generally dickish. we've stopped the mega tumblr spamming and badfic spamming, but that's just made them change tactics. in another year, it'll be something else. the anon comms will always prevail. remember when there was so much whining and crying over 'mah ips' and how having ips on would kill the comms? ips have been on for quite a while now and during the initial spook of omg the ips there was a lull, that went away and we're back to business as usual. because no one really cares about ips.
i wish there was something else to be done about the trolls intentionally chasing people off, but other than just ignoring and talking around them... there's just not much to be done.
and i'm not sure if you're included in the trolling comment since your suggestion is just to close shop, but either way, the comms are here for a reason and people are free to come and go as they please.
