I realized about a year or so ago that I used to do this diverging conversation thing a lot, and sometimes it led to really weird tags where the first part and the second part (or however many parts) would have radically different tones, or just flow really oddly. I've tried to limit my responses so there's only one thing to reply to at a time, even if it's no dialogue at all, just an action. It makes my tags shorter but the weird split doesn't happen as often.
