it's because common perspective has shifted with a greater understanding of things like the ecological impact of free-roaming cats, and the dangers to the cat from parasites and diseases that can pretty much only be contracted by outdoor animals. predators play a part, but they're far from the only factor. look at our parents' and grandparents' generations, and outdoor cats were considered normal in north america too, and the predatory species weren't any different then.
