I apologize if I weight in, but while I had a similar idea time ago, more on a format akin to High Seas, but again, it would make me so happy to see this game. I'd like to put in some ideas as well:
I think I have -some- of the science in mind to explain how do people get in that universe without saying "The Powers That Be Brought You Here For a Purpose", which could be simply the FTL physics of the world being used so much it begins to grab people from thousands of universes, the player characters included among that list. Some could have been simply taken at whim into the giant space station, while others with ships could have perhaps arrived simply due to a mess-up with their FTL/subspace drive.
The player characters possess some sort of insider network and existing under a "watch list", reasons ranging from being a legitimate threat to the government, to simply having the wrong name at the wrong place. That way, while they could access the Space Internet anywhere in that universe (with Space Forums, Space 4chan, Space Tumblr, Space News, Space Youtube, Space Hulu, etc), they could also have a private network for themselves.
I do like a lot the possibility of lightening up applications, focusing on samples, and letting this me something light-hearted so people can play whatever they want, whenever if it's adventure, SOL, war, crack, horror, etc.
