Unfortunately, I think only a minority of people who post in memes are interested in anything like CR. They want quick, context-less scenarios that are fluffy or cracky or smutty and that don't take any effort to develop or maintain. The players who would really be interested in some kind of a meme verse or storyline developing out of a meme thread are few and far between. (I think a lot more say they'd do it than would really follow through in practice.)
So crap like TFLN appeals to the majority not just because they don't want to have to think too much (I think the anon above is right about that part too) but because what they want to get out of posting to a meme is quick superficial fun. It's like cotton candy. It's sweet and looks big and pretty when you get it, but it's gone in a flash and doesn't fill you up at all.
