I think part of it is trying new things like they did with Awakening (which was more a "what have people asked for for forever because this is the last hurrah" sort of deal), but not hitting their stride yet. The pandering is pretty annoying to me, but I still love the series, and hope they can get it right.

And who knows, maybe the localization writing will surprise us a bit?
