i've only broken a screen once, and it was completely stupid circumstances: it fell like 6-8 inches out of a pocket and hit a tile floor. so from that i gather that screens don't necessarily break easily per se, but they do if you catch them at just the wrong angle.

alternately, maybe it's iphones that break easy and everyone equates all smartphones to iphones.
