Not weird at all, and I guess I may be in the minority about not caring if the PM's from a sock. Several of my PSLs are with players who have only ever talked to me via socks or newly made character journals, and they've all been cool people.

Getting a request like this along with a compliment on my threads would totally make my week, personally. You should go for it. Good luck!
