¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

How so?

Unfortunately, I'm not canon familiar but I had a strange inkling.

Too much reliance on headcanon. Too much Strong Black Woman trope that causes her to come across as a one dimensional caricature at times. She has either extremely positive or extremely negative CR with others, with no real build up for either, so it seems unnatural and forced. A lot of it contradicts her canon personality.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-23 11:59 am (UTC)(link)
raise your hand if you're surprised a white player falls back on racist tropes in order to portray a woman of color. anyone?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-23 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm unaware of her player's ethnicity so can't comment on that, but I stand by what I said about the trope.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-23 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
She's not the only black character in the Games to be turned into a caricature and have inexplicably extreme CR with everyone.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-23 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
In the other case I suspect you're referring to, I think the player has lost their grasp of the character and has been phoning it in for several months. In the case of Rochelle, I don't think the player even tried to begin with.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-23 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Na, in the case I'm referring to this person has reduced a black person to the Black Best Friend trope since day one. Everyone loves it because they all want a Black Best Friend.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-23 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, I'm lost. Who is the other case here?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-23 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Sam Wilson.

He exists to be your friend and help heal your wounds. He's been flanderized to the point I can't recognize the character anymore. Everyone eats it up because he gives their characters hc and who cares if the black man is just the Black Best Friend.

Oh thank god I thought I was the only one who saw it

Bri has a shallow understanding of her characters. And bears shit in woods. It doesn't have to be about race.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-23 02:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Part of the problem is if you know anything about these canons, they ARE basically being portrayed as they are in canon. Like, point out some well-rounded noncliche (especially women) black characters that aren't the Best Friend, the Foxy Brown (which can also include the I'M ABOUT TO OPEN A CAN OF WHOOP ASS ON YOU BOY), or the "just like you" where all the effort is put into making them as similar to the other canon characters as possible.

You can't flanderize a character like Rochelle or Sam because that's how canon already presents them lmao

(Anonymous) 2015-07-23 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Sam's a Black Best Friend, but he doesn't live to be everyone's emotional crutch. He has an ego, he flips between wanting to extract himself from action and wanting to throw himself back in, and he can be a bit of a show off. Bri has taken that away and made him a living emotional crutch for white folks.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-23 02:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Or she just wants more cr?

lmao you sound about as canon familiar as rochelle's player apparently is.

Flyby anon from flat view land

I'm not sure if that is giving Sam enough credit. He really wants to be part of something bigger than himself. He joins the military, works in the VA, and jumps to help Cap. He sees Steve as a symbol to fight for in Winter Soldier. Anyone who says differently obviously didn't notice him say "I am ready to get back into a fight I left because CAPTAIN AMERICA needs me." He sees the military as a way to fulfill himself, and even in civilian life he's working with them. He's not a therapist. He's a military man who is grasping for the sense of purpose he had during his military days. He's not just there to be a therapist.

I have never played the game myself but from what I've seen in gameplay videos, there doesn't seem to be much canon to go by.

I'm not defending the other aspects that are incorporated but where's the line between acceptable headcanon and unacceptable for a canon like this one? Or am I missing major character info here?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-23 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
ema wants to play a black woman stereotype oc, so she should do that, not bastardize a canon character to suit her own purposes.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-23 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
that wasn't anon's question you tit

no because i can read and understand questions being asked

Rochelle does have a personality and motivations in canon to draw on. The player simply chooses to ignore that, and that's what makes the unnecessary reliance on headcanon unacceptable.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-23 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It's like her player may have watched part of a L4D2 playthrough once and she's based Ro off of that, while expanding her personality with unsupported headcanon, leading to the OC vibe.
