rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Re: THE BISSEXUAL WITHIN
(Anonymous) 2014-11-24 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)first being that a vast majority of the arguments in the first thread were pulled directly from the art book and not the game itself, so those arguments do not have a basis in canon. i'd like to hear other arguments actually relating to the actual canon material if you have them, but right now i'm content to throw out nearly everything in that thread due to misinformation.
second being that wanting to see more of m/f in the fandom just for the sake of having m/f in the fandom is just as bad as people who want to plaster m/m all over the fandom just for the sake of having m/m. it trivializes the relationship and turns the characters into props, in a sense.
i can't speak for everyone, and i'll certainly not claim to, but i'm a person who pretty much always defaults to canon couples only. which typically means i shoot for m/f and end up stanning for m/f couples. but there was enough evidence in this canon, through the materials and dialogues that the canon gave us to think that there is some considerable weight to this theory, which honestly shocked me because i thought i would be the only person in fandom standing off to the sidelines screaming SEBASTIAN ONLY LOVES HIS WIFE WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE.
third being that i think you may have a misunderstanding as to what the theory actually says/is. it's not claiming that the ship is canon, or that they're secret lovers, or even that the feelings are mutual. the theory has nothing to do with joseph's feelings at all (at least, from the way i understand it), and it could very well be the case that joseph DOES have a crush on juli. all the theory says is that sebastian might be repressing stronger feelings for joseph and is lying to himself about it, because he's so staunchly opposed to the idea of being emotionally unfaithful to his wife while her disappearance goes unsolved and while their daughter's murder goes unaccounted for. that's it.
i agree with you that women almost always get shafted in fandom. they get mistreated and shoved to the side and blamed for everything under the sun. as a matter of fact, the next person who blames juli for shooting joseph might just end up with my foot in their ass, because it wasn't her fault and she didn't mean to do it, and joseph jumped right in front of her bullet on purpose to protect leslie. but i think it's a disservice to not look at the canon with a more discerning and critical eye just because you want more visibility for the only woman in it.
juli will get her day, i promise. hell, by the end of her DLCs, i might ship her with joseph, too. but don't let the rabid and annoying shippers get in your way of having real discussions like this one about the game, or close your mind off to possibilities. i'm not saying you have to listen to this theory or like it or even care. just at least try not to write it off as rabid shipping, because that's not what it is. not at its core.
Re: THE BISSEXUAL WITHIN
(Anonymous) 2014-11-24 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)you may be right in that my annoyance at conventional fandom stereotypes has made me extremely jaded to jo/seb at this point. personally, i still don't feel like there's canon evidence to point seb in that direction, but i might look into it more and try to ignore the painful idiocy and trolling of the fandom to come up with something more conclusive. when i first read it i thought it was an interesting take, but i became really annoyed with the people fervently taking the threads into places they seriously should not have gone (trolling, name-calling, -phobia, etc).
like i mentioned earlier i don't care about the ships themselves so much as the genders because ultimately i feel like shipping in TEW should be largely nonexistent, as it's hardly the most important or interesting part of the game in my opinion, but you bringing up that i'm trivializing it makes sense. i guess i am. i don't have anything to argue back with, but thanks for an insightful reply.
Re: THE BISSEXUAL WITHIN
in the meantime, try not to let the jerks in this fandom get you down. there sure are a lot of them.
