Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.

Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

1. Not a fan of it being exclusively so. Maybe have it be a factor since an underdog can get lucky after all and maybe the points can convey a luck factor.

If you do do that, set some sort of time limit for how long people can store up points.

Another idea is that points could be used to gain advantages, like an upgrade to a weapon, a neat new ability, some better armor, etc. That allows points to be useful and help towards winning while still being fair and not opening yourself to complaints about how Joe Average Guy was able to win out over a character that is godlike. Now if Joe Average Guy instead used some points to add something like poison to his weapon that gives a plausible explanation and rewards brains and creativity along with activity. Of course if Mr. Godlike knew Joe was likely to use poison, he could use his points to buy protection from poison as well.

2. Like with the first point, randomness doesn't work very well unless all matches are fair and evenly skilled characters are always paired up so it truly could go either way.

3. Have no issues with app caps and highly support them so mods don't get overwhelmed by the number of characters since a game of this style could require a lot of mod intervention.

1) To repeat something I answered last post I guess, there ARE going to be "weight class" differences, so godlike people won't be paired against Joe Average in equal circumstances. So there is that. Usually, Joe Average will be paired against other Joe Average, and godlike will be paired against other godlike. Of course, sometimes these things can be hard to determine in panfandom, but that's the idea.

I do like the idea of buying upgrades for combat, though, so that is definitely something I'm going to think about how to implement. Along with whatever other points system I work out.

2) Like I mentioned, skill levels will hopefully be ROUGHLY equivalent, but completely random selection isn't an option anyway. If there is any randomness, it will only augment decisions as opposed to deciding them completely.

Ah, I only skimmed since I was late to the last post so did not know how random or fair the matchups would be and you are right that in panfandom that can be a tricky beast and some characters may not be able to have fair matchups ever without some advantages given to opponents. Like if you ever got a Superman, obviously any opponents would need access to some kryptonite to even stand a chance.

And the upgrades can be implemented into actual plot too. It wasn't all that uncommon back in the gladiator days for one side to be given an unfair advantage since the matches would have a political side to them so any advantages bought with points could be part of the political side of the plot.

The overall concern I have with points being the only factor is that it could easily create a gap between newer characters and older characters as time in the game progresses. Flakes will obviously always complain, but it would suck for a new character to have little chance at winning and then discourage new blood from coming in unless activity checks come right before matches so even new characters will have a shot to earn some points.

For sure. If I go with a points system, I will definitely plan for it to be fair towards newbies. I mean, ideally people would be SPENDING their points so that they wouldn't be able to stack them up - perhaps I could set an upper limit on how many points could be stored up, or as mentioned, a time limit for how long they can be stored.

Powers will be nerfed to some degree or another if there are people like Superman. After all, unbeatable fighters aren't any fun.
