Honestly I stick with dresses that flare out and have a natural-waist cut, since it keeps the overhang hidden and doesn't emphasize my waist. I've gotten quite a few good dresses at Target (since they carry XXL sizes, which fit perfect for me).
Flowing tops with skirts can also help, along with wearing skirts that sit higher up on the waist and go a little above the knee. Black leggings can make the legs look slimmer. Avoid boots that cut off mid-calf, they'll make your legs look stocky.
And seriously, just avoid online shopping if you can. Especially when you get into plus-sizes, some things are just not fitted right for the bigger sizes they make (such as dresses just getting wider, but not longer).
