Most of my characters tend to react to canon puncturing with "Okay, whatever, crazy person." Sometimes with a dose of "They made ENTERTAINMENT about all those horrible things that happened?"

If a character isn't from a sitcom or something, it seems sensible that they would assume that it was a documentary or something about the rather major events they were tangled up in.
