Normally with something that contradictory I leave it up to a general 'this happened at some point in time' but personally I tend to go with Loki cutting it off when they're preteens/teens out of jealousy and spite and it turning to black because he didn't pay the dwarves. I imagine vanity was a huge part of her hatred over the end result, but rather than her parents shipping her off to warrior training because of it I have Sif either being enrolled in it beforehand or some time soon after the fact of her own free will.
With things like that, it's exceedingly hard to figure out what's canon and what isn't - the Avengers Origins: Thor has a different way of telling it and showing the relationship between Thor, Sif, and Loki than Tales of Asgard does (like excluding Balder from their triangle of friendship). Your best bet is to pick something that you feel works with the rest of established canon and works for you and whatever castmates you may or may not have! Everyone understands the pains of playing from comics, so don't ever feel like there's only one right way of doing it.
