Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

anime preferred, cartoons fine too, live action okay but i'm picky with the medium.

'Actually, I'm...' had a pretty average anime but the manga's pretty fun.

good YA recs please?

I used to be quite into YA lit, but I feel like I'm not looking in the right places because now the overall impression I get is that everything is weird dystopias! I'm pretty sure this can't be true, so!

Do anons have any YA canons they would recommend? Genre-wise I'm most interested in sci-fi/fantasy, and looking for something with interesting concepts/good world-building and plot. I don't really have a preference for characters, but I'd like something that doesn't fall into 'will they or won't they' love triangle shit where I want to strangle all the characters involved.

Primarily intending this as a book-rec thread, but I'm open to being rec'd other mediums (like webcomics) too!

I really enjoyed Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs . The movie was awful and really divergent from the source material. They made up events, changed characters' names, powers, and appearances. I haven't read the third book yet, but the second book's my favorite so far. The situations these kids end up in just trying to survive are really unique. I love that there's this historical aspect to it with the time loops in different eras and there's a sense of actual stakes. I've actually laughed out loud at some parts too.

There's also The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer which are sci-fi retellings of classic fairytales all set in the same universe. It starts off with Cinder who is a cyborg mechanic in a world where such a thing is looked down on. There's a plague, diplomatic tensions, and all sorts of interesting setup for the rest of the books in the series. I'm on the second book, Scarlet, which continues with Cinder's events, but also begins to follow Scarlet aka little red ridding hood, and a few other fairytale characters. It's just really cool to see these classic characters with a sci-fi twist.

The 'Finishing School' series is pretty good. Basically, it's Victorian-era-but-with-steampunk-elements, upper-class teenage girls learning to be assassins. And there's werewolves and vampires and ghosts too.

And if you end up liking that, the author wrote two more series as well, but they're adult novels rather than YA.

I remember being pretty keen on Tom Pollock's Skyscraper Throne trilogy. Two girls outrun horrors, struggling to save a London that's turned malevolently alive. Loved it for its city-specific monsters + its emphasis on female friendship, but it is super, super urban fantasy, so fair warning if you aren't into that.

I really enjoyed The Midnighters series by Scott Westerfield. It's kind of like Persona 3 in that there's a hidden hour at night with creepy crawlies abound, but instead of summoning gods with guns it involves kicking ass with weapon enchanted by math. Seriously.

The Leviathan series by the same author is really good, too. Alternate History WWI with a fight between what amount to steampunk mechs and bio-engineered living flying machines.

Not entirely sure if this falls into YA, but I read them when I was younger, so...

The Valdemar series by Mercedes Lackey. Good worldbuilding that goes outside of the main city and expands to other parts of the world. Particularly if you go into the earlier and later versions.

The Enchanted Forest Chronicles, starting with Dealing with Dragons. Classic. You're welcome.
