Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

jyn erso (rogue one)

(Anonymous) 2017-04-27 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I've never played from a Star Wars canon before, but I'd like to give her a shot. Does any anons have any advice about the character? Things that are maybe too focused on (beyond shipping w/Cassian) or not focused on enough?

i'd say read the novelization (and rebel rising when it comes out in may), rather than relying on the movie alone. alexander freed's narration added a lot to her character for me.

if you're only interested in playing with other r1 characters, say so in your top-levels. i've hit up jyns on bakerstreet with other star wars characters in the past and gotten no response, which was a waste of my time and theirs.

Read the novelization if you haven't already. Jyn's entire arc is that she's a lapsed believer at the start of the movie, and by the end of it she's found her faith in the cause as well as a place to belong. You can see it happening during the movie, but you don't really see why it happens.

Because most of it was internal. The novelizations have things like five paragraphs of internal introspection describing how she feels about her father and how his death impacted her. You'll need that if you want to play her.

shiro | voltron

any basic do's and don't's you anons would advise? i want to resort to fleshing him out with a little bit of headcanon about his time in the garrison so i wanted to know how far i could or should take that.

i'm also planning on apping him to a game, and i wondered if anyone had some tips on how to balance his trauma and ptsd with the put together front he presents when dealing with strangers? i want to have him deal with it in the game but i don't want to come off as a drama llama.

These two threads cover a lot of good ground IMO, and even if you don't agree, they give you a starting point for your own headcanon. Just ignore the weird shipping commentary.

thanks! these answers are already very helpful. i'm not planning on instigating any ships in-game anyway so i'll just focus on the rest.

YONDU | MCU

hey anons, i'm esl and while i understand dialogue just fine, some times i feel like i can't exactly point out certain quirks in voices. yondu gave me the impression he has a very specific manner of speaking, any tips on that?

Yondu has a bit of a southern drawl to my ears. I'm not too good with southern dialects and I'm pretty sure there's several styles, so I can't point you in that direction.

I'm not esl, but what helps me when I'm studying a character with a different accent or dialect is I find as many clips as I can and I write out all their lines. If you need to, write out what he's saying phonetically, and see if that helps you identify patterns.

Does he drop the g on -ing words? What words or phrases does he use most? What words does he not use? Does he use a lot of contractions? When does and doesn't he use contractions? Can you identify any slang he's partial to?

I haven't seen Guardians in a while, but what I remember Yondu spoke very informally. Compare his lines to someone that speaks very properly sometime, like that one lady that's in charge of that one planet they saved in the first movie if you need some contrast. I keep a one-page work doc for all my characters with iconic samples of their lines, so that I can switch more easily from writing my stiff empress character to my poorly-educated fighter, for example.

I hope that helps at all!

MULTILINGUAL CHILDREN

(Anonymous) 2017-05-08 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
my psl partner and i wanna rp domestic threads. what are some good resources for playing a trilingual kid right?

one character is a native japanese speaker, let's say the other one speaks "spanish", and then there's english. i can definitely see the characters referring to the grandparents as abuelo and abuela (spanish-speaker's parents) and ji-chan and ba-chan (japanese-speaker's parents), and there will probably be some language-mixing moments ("quiero tamago!" or "i want egg(s)") but how else would the multiple languages come into play?

both characters live in japan and the native japanese parent is learning "spanish" in order to bond with their partner/in-laws. they'd speak mostly japanese at home but would encourage the non-japanese grandparents to speak in their native tongue.

i know there are different strategies but i'm mostly looking for dos and don'ts, personal experiences, those sorts of things.

I don't have specific recommendations for playing this out in RP, but there are a lot of parenting blogs on bi- and trilingualism. I'm sure you've taken a look, but if you haven't, you'll find some great resources by googling "raising a trilingual child." It sounds like a fun subject for a psl--good luck!

nah, yoi is kind of bland imo.

but i wouldn't mind seeing other roleplayers playing this kind of thing! yoi or not.
