Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Naoto Shirogane - Persona 4

I really want to play her, so any advice in general would be fantastic. I feel like Naoto is one of those characters you could do Very Wrong and I want to avoid that.

How to play Naoto correctly

Step 1: she's not Trans or genderqueer
Step 2: go back to step one.

Definitely the key thing I'm going to keep in mind while playing her! I know that's something a lot of people do wrong. Which doesn't make sense given her social link but yeah. Thank you for the response!

Naoto touches on a lot of themes transfolk usually have to deal with: figuring yourself out, gender identity, gender roles in society and how it all fits together when you're not a clean round peg in a round hole. So it was easy to read into it and come to the conclusion she's trans.

I think the best way to understand Naoto's character and why she acts how she does is to do background reading on feminism in Japan. Japan is horrendous when it comes to the plasticity of their gender roles. Kanji's arc touches on this too, his conflict is about having feminine interests as a guy. Even with kids shows, the magical girl genre usually boils down to, "you can be a hero, but you have to wear frills and use love-heart attacks and more often than not also raise a magical baby on the side".

If you can do the background reading and get into the headspace of a culture that hammers home the point of, "police work is a manly profession, only men can do manly jobs", then you can understand why Naoto goes so far in everything she does, why she's so reluctant to act feminine. If you still can't picture it, Zootopia had a really good analogy: "there's never been a bunny police officer" and all of her co-workers are big hulking animals.

Also, if you fancy digging your teeth into some Science(!), look up "identity bifurcation". The tl;dr is that when a person is in an environment that conflicts with their personality or threatens to stereotype them as disadvantaged (e.g. a female executive in a male-dominated, power-driven workplace), one coping mechanism is to essentially separate your "personal identity" from your "workplace identity" (e.g. "when I am at work, I'm an executive, not a woman".)

Sora | Kingdom Hearts

Oop, didn't realize I originally posted this on an older post, yay mobile lol Anyway, c/p time.

How would one go about playing him given the convoluted plots going on so far? I understand the plot well enough and I'd rather take him from the most current game (3D) as who knows when KH3 is coming out and I don't want to wait. I guess I'm curious because I've always wanted to play from this fandom but could never settle in a character, Sora is someone I do genuinely like as a character and 3D did show us a bit more to him than being happy go lucky all the time. It's just a lot to figure given Xehanort did have a good point on exactly where does Sora begin given he has Ven and Roxas in him, Xion too if I remember right.

I may ultimately go for another character all together but some advice would be nice to help me decide! Much appreciated. :)

I think you just need to take a step back because what you're doing, I think, is overcomplicating things a little. The question of who Sora is and where he begins is a good one, and you should have some ideas on it. But it's also pretty irrelevant unless you really want to explicitly thread out Ven/Roxas/Xion getting extracted from him, because who Sora is at the point you want to pull him is the character you see depicted in game.

And everybody gets influenced by other people. Sora got Ven shoved into him at a really young age. So yeah, maybe a Sora who didn't become a living soul jar might be more serious and grim without that influence guiding his actions. Maybe he would've been a second Squall. But there's no way of us knowing that given how early it happened, and I'd also argue that if you've been happy go lucky for pretty much all of your life at some point it'll become your habit, not the habit of something else inside of you.

Basically: there's no way of canonically answering that question and I wouldn't worry about it too much in regards to giving a definitive answer.

As for history and the plots of Kingdom Hearts, it's what Sora knows which is important, not the overarching history of the franchise and the motivations of blah blah blah. Luxord's Somebody might've been pivotal in the development of some world or another before he joined Organization XIII. But Sora doesn't have to worry about that, even if it ends up being the subject of a cell phone side game and is really cool.

I figured I probably was but I just wanted to be sure. It's also been quite some time since being in the fandom (I am trying to find time to play the Remixes so I can also review and get myself sorted) so I guess I just wanted to be sure and also hear others' opinions in the whole matter.

Thank you very much for the response!
